Do you really NEED a 17HMR and a 22WMR?

I'm waiting for delivery of a 17HMR and can't wait to try it out!!! A friend has one and I've seen the results on paper and in the field - especially on groundhogs - it's awesome!

I have had a 22WMR for a few years and it's a great gun/cartridge. Good accuracy, fun to shoot and effective for hunting.

My question is really do you need, shoot, hunt with, and enjoy using both?

Trying new guns/calibers is so much fun - do you keep the 22WMR or clear up space for the 17???

What do you think?

Thanks - SD

I know alot of know-it-alls(like myself) will jump on this but....I'd ditch the .22 Mag. because I find the .17HMR shoots better groups, both in revolvers and rifles. I'm talking about"on the average", the only advantage i can see to the .22 Mag. is that it may hit harder on the larger varmints(coyotes) out past 100 yds.

I personally don't see he point in having both. I'd say sell that 22 mag, and purchase something new, like more ammo for your 17, or another gun.

I've been here before, but I'll do it again. I bought both, in very similar rifles, and sold the HMR, because it really won't hold a candle next to the WMR. But who am I to say don't buy another rifle. It's fun to learn for yourself.

I have a CZ 452 American in each Chambering, and would have a tough time deciding to get rid of either one. Too many guns, too little time!! Regards, Eagleye.

X2 The wmr hits a heck of a lot harder than the .17 no contest.

If we had gophers around here it might be different, but I picked the harder punch of the .22 WMR over the flatter shooting .17 HMR. If I need to reach out past 100 yards, then I grab the .223 Rem.

22mag Vs 17hmr

You can get Federal or Hornady 30 grain ammo that shoots 2200 Feet per second. Thats close to the 17HMR for speed with a lot more punch! The Hornady ammo is alo available with VMAX bullets, that have a good ballisitic profile for long shots.

Been there once as well. I also dropped the .17 HMR and went with the .22 Mag. Best decision I made. Ammo is a bit cheaper and it hits with alot more authority than the .17 HMR. If you purchase a decent rifle in WMR, it is just as accurate as the .17.

WMR all th way!!!!

NEED? What does that have to do with anything? Besides there are many ways to skin this cat. I went with a 223 in a Ruger No 1 and 22lr in a CZ452. I figure I am pretty much covered either way although I seem to be developing a hankering for a 22 Swift or mebbe a 22 Hornet. Logic and need are seldom involved in the choice anyways. WANT is so much better IMHO..:)

Need both? Of course. You have to own them both to compare them. The question for me, when I find a good deal on something I like, is whether I really need three copies of the exact same rifle. Right I have I have 3 Voere 2112s and 4 identical gevarm E-1s, with no plans to sell any of them.
