Hey all,
I've been chatting with a friend about the availability of various rifles in Canada and how the numbers have been dwindling due to various bans. Kodiak has recently been making ar180b clones and I was wondering why no-one has tried to make valmet rifle clones. Is there some legal reason why?
Also if there is a thread about this already out there please let me know and I can take this one down.
Thanks!

There are a few models of Valmet AK based rifles that are not prohibited. But all other AK type firearms are prohibited.
Valmet made the n-r ones. Valmet was a specific company. An exact duplicate of an original Valmet is not a Valmet - it is a prohibited AK variant.

As stated in a previous post some Valmet rifles are not prohibited and they are listed by name. Anything else is prohibited

The firearm of the design commonly known as the AK-47 rifle, and any variant or modified version of it except for the Valmet Hunter, the Valmet Hunter Auto and the Valmet M78 rifles

I find that the Type 81sa's fill that demand now anyway. U want an NR AK styled gun, buy a Type 81sa and possibly mod it. People complain that Type 81sa's are 500 dollar guns being sold for 2000... and they have the right. Well as far as i can tell the Valmets are a 1000 dollar gun being sold for 4000 lol. Ive handled a few different Valmets over the years so im not totally out of place to say that.

I remember somewhere ... CanadaAmmo I believe tried to buy the rights to the Valmet, but the company that owns the rights wouldn’t sell ... owned by a conglomerate. I think I remember that comment somewhere ... maybe on one of those what canadaammo should make next threads.

a copy of an AK is still an AK unless you can get the gov't to give a bunch to first nation up north before the write new laws not realizing they gave the first nations AK copies

Do you have any proof this is what actually happened? I've been hearing this rumor for years, but have yet to see any supporting evidence...

As for repros, If it doesn't come out of the Valmet factory, its not a Valmet. And as far as I know, Valmet stopped making AKs a long time ago.

It was written into the FRT notes. May still be there.

One can make an inference because the original OiC included all AK rifles.

The valmet rifles were then excluded from the prohibited list, in this 1998 Canada gazette publication. http://www.gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/1998/1998-09-30/pdf/g2-13220.pdf

This class comprises the paramilitary firearms which are cur-
rently prohibited weapons pursuant to Orders in Council made
under subsection 84(1) of the Criminal Code as it now stands. No
new firearms are being added to the class. One firearm, the
Valmet Hunter, including the Valmet Hunter Auto and the Val-
met M78, has been deleted from the class, as it has been deter-
mined that it is not essentially a paramilitary firearm and is suit-
able for hunting purposes.

The inference being they made a mistake and had to fix it.

They had to fix it because they had specifically supplied variants of this firearm to northern communities. Never mind that they now claim that rifles of this general type are associated with violence in those same communities. The hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Canada's gun laws are not clear when it comes to prohibited guns, especially the above listed as well as the recently prohibited long guns other than AR-15 which is clearly politically motivated. But on the other hand, it is still better than prohibiting all semi autos.

I believe Tactical Imports is getting another shipment of T81 SAs sometime time near the end of the year so you can expect to see them in the $1000-$1500 price range again if that happens.

Stamped M78s are kind of meh. Milled are much better looking, but usually have phosphate like finish. Hunters are absolutely gorgeous with fire bluing and walnut stocks.
