Do you blokes think the 33 RCM is in the same league as the 325 WSM? or is there a substantial or noticable difference for say Elk sized game, out to 400m....
understandably under 200m its not much difference (few fps tho) .. it wouldnt matter.

but once out 300 -400m , using a 180gr 338 projie V really anything in the 325, is the WSM going to outshine it always?

case capicity seems to be the big factor with the RCM an projies larger than 225gr

keento hear ya thoughts

Here's some data for comparison. I myself am partial to the 325 wsm, my loads with 195gr-200gr loads have been in 2950 fps area. The 325 seems to have 100 fps on the 338 Ruger.

Thank You!

yeah fair enough, a sleeker A bond, thats enough right there.

thanks.

its for a bro an a bit longer range with his stubby little RCM lol

I have a Winchester M70 "Ultimate Shadow" chambered in 325 WSM. This rifle seems to prefer bullets in the 185 - 200 grain window.

My pet load consists of the 196 Oryx, driven by 7x grains of Norma MRP. In my 24" barrel, that graphs just over 3000 fps, which
is a thumper load. I shot a 325 lb Black Bear with it, and it literally flattened him. Also took 2 Whitetails with the same load but with
the Norma 196 grain Dual Core bullet. [Tombac jacket] Both DRT, but the results lead me to believe that this bullet is better suited
to the 8x57, since at 325 velocities, it seems a bit fragile.

My 325 is quite accurate, and it is also not particularly fussy within the bullet weights I mentioned above. I have 3-400 of the 185
grain Remington Cor-Lokt, originally designed for the 8mm Rem Mag. It should be a great 325 WSM bullet, but I have not shot any-
thing with it yet. It steps out just shy of 3100 fps with the most accurate load.

I definitely feel that the 325 has a bit of an advantage over the 338 RCM. Dave.

I've shot 250gr Woodleigh in the 325 WSM. 68.4grs RL26 did 2650 fps from a 24" Model 70. That's 338 Win Mag territory

The typical load for that rifle is 200gr Barnes TSX over 62.8grs RL16, speed is 2840 fps

Dave have you shot 220 woodleighs from your 8mm wsm or mag?

I have shot the 220 Woodleigh and the 220 Hornady I.L. [now out of production] in my 8mm Mag, but not
in the WSM. The Hornady shot well, but no Woodleigh combination I tried shot as well as I would have liked.
When the 220 Swift A-Frame shoots into ¾ moa at 3100 MV, I did not see any reason to settle for 1¾ moa
from the Woodleigh at similar speeds.

I did try a few Sierra Game King 220's in the WSM. They shot quite acceptably, but I'm not sure of how
tough they really are, so reverted back to the 196 Oryx and the 200 AB. Dave.

Would be interesting and maybe more fair to see how those projectiles in the WSM measure up to 200-225 grain .338 in the WM in terms of terminal effect

Maybe it wasn’t that diminishing returns started with the 338 bore and this case but the similarity with the 8mm and popularity of light bullets that killed the 338 WSM and 35 Sambar

Hey mate, have you got onto a Box of Woodleighs to try yet?
they use them on the Sambar deer down here with no ill reports, text book 'shrooms etc :)

ps- not all are as hard to please as dave... "3/4 moa or better"... haha, some of us are posting photos on social media about our 1 & 3/4 groups :D :D but both freezers are just as full

The 338 RCM gives slightly better than 338-06 performance in a short action.

The 325 WSM has about 15% more case capacity than the 338 RCM but a slightly smaller bore size, so for the same bullet weight, the 325 WSM will have a MV about 100 fps faster than the 338 RCM for most bullet weights, and will produce more recoil as a result.

There are not quite as many bullet selections for 8mm as for the 338 Cal. http://www.shootforum.com/forum/bulletdb.html

Comes down to caliber preferences IMO.

I realize that this is getting off the question but what about 338 WSM or even better…. The 35 Sambar;)
One retailer here in Canada has a new set of 338 WSM dies for $40. I could buy it and send it across the pond(s) to you.

I’m getting 3000fps with 200 gr Barnes TTSX with my 35 Sambar and R17 powder. I used some published data from a known gun writer. I plan to take my moose and elk with it again this year!

In a general sort of way big game cartridges are divided into light, medium and heavy. The two you're discussing are both mild mediums and by default are going to end up in the same ball-park. In the mean-time splitting hairs is fun. ;) I wouldn't use either for long range.

hey Fuzzy i missed this one-
I've seen a 338 WSM whilst in a hut in NZ, a hunter strolled in an we got talking, i asked what the canon he was toting and it was a 338 WSM! random as!
the 35 Sambar certainly has its place down under but its seldom seen, much the same as the 338wsm.... i did however see some RCBs? i think 338 wsm loading dies on an aussie website recently for some hella price--

Ive spoken to the Bro about the RCM / WSM upgrade but its his little pride an joy and he is happy with the weight and the OAL of the ruger compact hawkeye thingy--- the only thing i have almost gotten him keen on is trying the 180gr PPSN from Woodleigh to extend his usable range with minimum hold overs-- i think he is due to visit in the next few weeks an bringin over some Gongs for me to put out in the paddock, with that he will be sending a few down range at extended ranges (for him...)
i'll see where he is at after that and once we work out usable holdovers--

the bloke is a typical "walk them up" hunter , loves the close stuff in the thick stuff often with the 225 PPSN an i think its only about 2600 fps..... ill give him a go wit hthe 7 rem mag out at 500m or so and see what he then thinks :)

appreciate the offer for certain mate-

got this RCM on the range today an shot out to 300m, its 2.5 high at 100m, was hitting the 300 sweet but then drop was killing it for consistant hold over at 350+

however, it hit the gongs hard, but i dont rekon as hard as the 7 rem mag :)

considering the bro hadnt shot past 200m he did real well on the gongers-

est 2600fps 225gr ppsn.
