ruger hawkeye vs rem 700 sps

I would bet that the average Rem 700 SPS will outshoot the average Ruger hawkeye, out of the box. That doesnt mean it is a better rifle. Rugers are good rifles, go handle both and pick which one feels best to you

Ruger comes with a good set of rings which add alot of value, something to consider.
Remington has so many aftermarket goodies at decent prices with many floating around here on CGN.
Remington has always been good to me so my vote would be Remington.

Cheers!!

They are both good rifles, I'd go for Ruger, but I like CRF actions.

pick the one that appeals to you more.

And solid rings in the price. Add another 100.00 bucks to any other rifle for as good quality rings and bases. I've had my share of ruger rifles and they've all shot well. The SPS is a good gun, but when looking at the two side by side, I think you just get more for your money with a ruger. Both have lots of aftermarket parts for them, and both should shoot on par with eachother.
Like Tod said, pick em up side by side, and see which floats your boat.

ruger, definitely. at $599 at SIR mailorder right now the Ruger Hawkeye stainless is a steal. i picked up a Savage 16FCSS a little while ago for $609+tax, after rings and bases it was around $730+tax/ship. and when i saw the Ruger Hawkeye stainless w/rings for $599 i was kicking myself for not getting one of those instead :runaway:

I don't remember who it was, but a member here was having horrible problems getting even reasonable accuracy out of his Hawkeye. Reading around the 'net, they seem to be very inconsistent. For hunting, probably OK. For true accuracy, Remington's probably the better bet.

A stainless/synthetic that now has an adjustable trigger...........with rings for $599

HArd to pass up that ruger. Plus it comes in 338 Fed!!!!!

tell me about it :(
ah well, at least i can console myself with the fact that i have an accutrigger, DM and easy to change barrels.

im thinking about ordering one anyways in .223 and throwing my spare 3200 elite 10x mil-dot on it. my 14lb 700P is getting a little heavy to lug around.

I have had lots of Ruger rifles and they sometimes are a bit tougher to get good accuracy out of.With a little tinkering they are fine shooters though, but Remington seems to be easier to accurize, at least for me.

i never had any accuracy problems with my Rugers - i lucked out and they are all sub-MOA. i say 'lucked out' because it seems that you could get a sub-MOA up to a ~1.5 MOA gun from pretty much any factory rifle these days - Remington, Ruger, Winchester, Savage, etc. but i also think that ammo might have a lot to do with these 'lemons' a lot of people post about in forums - many hunters i know tend to exclusively use one or two specific brand/types of ammo, and a certain rifle may not group well with that specific ammo. its important to try at least 3-4 different loads in your gun to see how it shoots with different ammo.

i wonder why these Rugers arent free-floated?
has anyone tried to open up the barrel channel and float a Hawkeye barrel? i wonder if/how much this would improve accuracy.

its a fact that a lot of the old Remington CDLs would actually shoot worse when floated -- they seemed to require the little 'bump' on the barrel channel near the tip of the forearm to exert a certain amount of pressure on the barrel, and often when this was relieved they shot worse.

That $599 price sounds excellent and is definately a sale price. I bought my all weather M77 when it was on sale because the Hawkeyes were replacing them. I like the fit of the stock in my hand and think the included rings and integral bases are a high quality plus. I can't comment on the calibres you are looking for, but my 223 shoots very well.

i have been working in a gunshop partime and the feed back is henceforth memorized and since rem andd ruger are major percentages of our stock, this is relevant to this question.everyone is impressed with the new lc6 trigger, especially compared to the mkII's.most people really like the new target gray over the bright stainless finish on the last guns and factor in the machined base and very solid rings, ruger tends to get the edge.another factor has been the winchester type 3 position safety which allows the action to be locked while carrying, i have heard a few instances of rem actions unlocking on overgrowth or coming out of battery enough to be unshootable.the hawkeye has the new thicker limbsaver type of butstock and improved classic style stock.the only negative feedback on unbiased shooters has been that laser etched ruger logo on the magazine plate and lack of removable magazine options. most people who have gone to the remington are honest enough about being rem owners for long time and the 3 layers of steel safety thing.i worked the entire hunting season up here and sold alot of 300 and 338 magnums, mostly tikas then savage combos (cheap) then hawkeyes then rems.i think remington also priced themselves out of the market so the sps makes people leary because its so much cheaper

SIR mailorder just has really good prices. theyre around $750 elsewhere.

compare the regular SIR prices to, say, LeBarons (which is still lower than most gun dealers). Lebarons has 20% off for CLUB MEMBERS right now and their prices with 20% off are still often higher than the regular SIR price. pretty crazy.
especially look at the difference between the Marlin lever actions -- its often $200 or more.
