OK, You asked for it ... What are the most overrated RIFLE cartridges?

You know that at 100 yards the Prvi PSP 7.62x39 (not SAAMI and ~2550 fps) from an SKS is within 10 (ten) fps of the Nosler Trophy Grade 150 accubond from the Overrated Shorty 308 and ONE fps of the Remington 150 PSP.

And what would that little 123gr PSP (Sectional density is .183) do on impact compared to a 150gr Accubond? Laugh2You don't hear of too many hunters using 7.62x39 for elk or moose

Maybe a whole new thread with a poll?

Would you prefer to hunt moose with a 16” barrel 308 and 150gr NAB or a SKS with 123gr PSP ?

If you want a short barreled 30 cal that has enough mustard to flatten deer out to 150y, build a 300 blackout.
Under 16", the blackout will dance with a x39 with less powder, less muzzle blast, and you can make brass from 223 (very easily) if you wanted to do it ultra cheap. All you need is a small cutoff saw, or even a hacksaw, and a $20 jig that you can buy off Amazon. If you're using range pickup brass, just pay attention to the headstamp as some brass is thick and would need to be neck turned. There are lists online.

Did a bit of testing a couple weeks ago with my 10.5" barrel, non-restricted 300BLK with H110 and 1x fired converted 223 brass that I got for nearly nothing. 110gr Hornady vmax averaged 2270fps with 20.2gr of H110, no pressure signs. Best node was 2230fps at 19.8 grains.
135gr Sierra varminters topped out at 2085fps, best node was at 2030fps and 18.4 grains.
If 10.5" is too short and handy, guys are gaining another 200-250fps with a 16" barrel.
If I were going more than 16", the x39 pulls away. Below that the blackout is worth a look.

I’ve only killed black bear with a SKS. But I’m not the one saying that the SKS will drop a deer faster so I wanted to understand if this opinion was based on actual observation.

So you don't have any experience, but claim that an Accubond at <2450 fps will drop a deer faster than a PSP at the identical or greater velocity and it is out to 100 yards. I've taken deer with both the SKS and the Short 308. I bought my first SKS in 1995 and my first Short 308 in 2001. I had a 15.5" 7x57 as well.

I'll be waiting for the field photos...

I'll get right on it, in the meantime you can continue to fantasize that the Overrated Short 308 is in a different class than the SKS, that somehow 25 grains of bullet at the same or less velocity is in a different ballpark.

308 has superior ballistics, and the variety of hunting ammo and handload options favor it 100:1 over the 7.62x39. This is no fantasy, it's reality

Picking the best vs best ammo, the 308 has 90% more energy at 300 yards than the x39, from a shorter barrel. A 24" 300wm w/ 180gr has only 63% more energy than the 308 16"

No, I didn't make any claims about shooting deer with a SKS.

I got my first SKS in the early 1990's. Paid $75 for it. Got a SMLE Jungle carbine around the same time and it seemed to kill deer just fine with it's 18.5" barrel. 7.62x39 works just fine, just like a 30-30. If you are only shooting deer at 100 yards then pretty much anything will work.

Did the SKS shot deer die faster than 308 or 7x57 shot deer?

There are many CZ527 carbines chambered in x39 used by deer hunters from coast to coast. It's effective at closer ranges. Yes, 308 still produces better energy, but is much less efficient in shorter barreled rifles.

The SKS and the short 308 worked about the same. Never hunted the short 7x57, but Federal ammo didn't even break 2000 fps.

You should have keep the #5, it would outperform the Shorty 308 feed with either the expensive $75 Nosler Trophy Grade (2450fs) or the $42 Remington PSP (2496 fps)

You should try hand loading your own ammunition for superior performance in your short barreled rifles. A friends 16.5" Ruger m77 Compact 7mm-08 will push a 139gr SST to 2675 fps. The 7x57 is a bit larger case yet than the '08
