There were 3 Browning Hi Powers at one of yesterday's auctions

The first one sold for $700.00
The two others sold for $1400.00 and $1500.00 respectively.

Why is there such a difference in price?
The only difference I can see is the hammer spur and the inscription on the slides.
But there must be a significant difference, the bidders are not all goofballs.

Please can somebody enlighten me?

Sold for $700.00

The $700 HI Power has a non Browning serial number. It looks like one of the FEG built "counterfeit " copies that have the slides roll marked as FN built units. There are no Belgian proof marks anywhere on these guns.I have one of those. If it is one, he over paid.

They aren’t all goof balls, but a lot of them are. That $1400 Hi Power is actually 1400 plus the 210 buyers premium plus taxes plus shipping. you are sneaking up on $2000 very quickly. For sellers, those auctions are awesome.

So the $700 Hi Power is made by FEG in Hungary, I heard of it, but I would never have seen the difference.

The $1400 Hi Power comes to $1820 including feesand taxes
The $1500 Hi Power comes to $1950 including feesand taxes

I have one Hi Power identical to the ones sold for $1400 and $1500 (but in better condition), and can't believe that they sell for that kind of money.

Yep but the seller also has to pay auctions costs 25% so the seller only gets $1050 so add the 15 % buyers premium and the 13% tax to the $1400 and its $1792 plus shipping . That's why you should use EE and save $742

I was looking at the HP but noticed it had a B serial number which I remember reading on here that B was used by FEG on their clones

Thanks for your info.
Where can I find out if my Browning Hi power has the "correct" serial number?

You might try here for starters:

Which is about what you MIGHT get here, but the beauty is you don’t have to wade through all the retards being idiots to get to the serious buyer(s).

Thanks, according to that list, my Hi Power was manufactured in 1968, same year as my first car, a Volkswagen beatle. :)

A 1968 Browning HP would be a "T" series (T being the first digit of the serial number), which would bring a premium sales price (IMO) - a more desirable model to those in the know
But maybe not a 1400 dollar premium ;)

That's what I thought

mine has the serial number T2216XX

Thanks Auggie D, mine is a 1989, one of the group imported from Israel, in good shape, not fired a bunch just holster carried with the wear marks to show for it!

That Frankenstein303 who bought the first one is probably a dealer, he always pre-bids a swack of guns right up to the retail mark then collects about half of what he bids on. The rest go to morons who pay too much and the ones he buys must end up in Frank's shop or on EE (I've never been able to figure out who he is but I'm sure he's on this site)...If he isn't a dealer, he must have one hell of a collection...

Interesting thread, I am considering reducing my firearms collection as I am aging, this information helps as one of the pistols will possibly be my HP, is there a site that can give a reasonably close idea of what to ask for these pistols? I guess the auction would be one place but prices seem fairly high!

Looks like a bidding war between two or more buyers who "had" to have a T series, no matter the cost, plus Frankenstein303 driving up the price.
