Thinking of getting a Henry AR7 survival rifle for my wilderness ATV rides and would like to know if they are any good of if there is somthing else that is better/smaler/tougher.

thanks

the AR7 can be stored in it's butt stock. But i believe if you have a rifle on an ATV it needs to be encased? If that is the case, does having the rifle broken down into it's butt stock be considered as encased? If so, the AR7 seems to be compact and handy rifle on an ATV. If not then having the advantage of being broken down to such a small package seem not as handy. And a full size rifle & case might be a better bet.

That make sense?

..................depends on the province. Here in god's country it doesn't have to be. You can have a rifle slung on your shoulder as you ride an atv or snow machine.

Wow never thought it could be a case issue! ! I brought along a full-length rifle this year and found that it stuk out the sides of the bike. Aside from taking up precious space for bags, tent and other essential camping stuff just wanted something that would fit into my Bag along with my extra duds etc.

I'm surprised with the neg. review, I have heard good things about them before. What didnt you like?

The Henry uses an "improved" (plastic) barrel. Mine was absolute crap; I replaced it with a Charter Arms (aluminum) barrel.

AR-7 magazines manufactured by the rifle manufacturer work well. Armalite likes Armalite. Henry likes Henry. Inspect them, because there are differences and they don't mix well.

Boy not allot of pro's for the Henry!
I checked out the Marlin Papoose Oddbawl mentioned and it seems to be a standard semi auto that has a threaded removable barrel all SS with a polymer stock. Also comes with a case for about the same price as an AR7 $220.00.

The Ruger 10/22 WIN94 suggested is $285.00 plus the butler creek folding stock at $78.00 totaling $383.00 not SS and no case. Probably a better rifle but for what I need it's a no brainier and will probably go for the marlin!

Thanks for all your comments guys it sure makes choosing allot easier when one knows more about the product

Junk, my neighbor has one in the original card board box.

The gun is super light, so it feels like a toy, its awkward to to hold in a shooting position, and you'll be lucky to hit the broad side of a barn with the thing, horribly inaccurate. And the thing jams every other shot!

I really would like to know if he used Minimags, at the risk of sounding repetitive. Had you shot it, personally?

Frontier's got stainless 10/22's on sale for $260 right now....

I've got a papoose and it's pretty good but the trigger is heavy and difficult to improve.

In the long run the 10/22 is probably better and can be set up in lot's of different configurations with all the aftermarket parts available.

I've had 6 or 7 AR7"s over the years, never had a bad one yet. Picky as hell about which ammo they like, but once you find the stuff it likes, it's a GREAT little rifle. Are you going to win target shoots with it? Nope. But find me another gun, ANYWHERE, that isw A: Non restricted, B: Semi, and C: And this is the important part: Fits into a 2.5" X 6" x 16.5 " box!

The gun weighs nothing, takes up no room, comes with it's own "case", is impervious to moisture, and even floats. Say what you like, but for a backpack survival gun the AR7 is better than anything out there.

No we didn't use mini mags, does it say in the manual to use only mini mags??? No it says 22 lr, which means it should take any 22 rimfire rounds fine!

And yea, I borrowed it once to go winter camping. You'd starve if you had to depend on this rifle!

Easy there, friend - no aggression was meant on my part...

;)

The thing is - and few seem to acknowledge this - that when the rifle comes from the factory, the springs are initially very, very stiff. You need some extra "oomph" to cycle the action; otherwise, it's a straight-pull boltie...

Many rimfires are finicky this way until a brick or two goes through them.
