Uberti 1885 in 40-65

I was at the range this morning with my son, playing with this rifle.
The rifle: Uberti Hiwall in 40-65 WCF. 32" heavy barrel.
Sights: Rear is a Browning Soule tang sight and the front is a Lee Shaver globe with level.
Distance: 100 yds.

The load: 32 grs IMR 4895 under a 400 gr. "Snover" boolit. Starline cases.

The sights need adjusting!

I have four moulds that cast different style boolits so that's on the agenda for range day on Thursday!

I bought it and another Uberti in 38-55 from the estate of an older gent who was a dedicated BPCR shooter. Where he got it is anybody's guess!!! I don't think it was fired much if at all because I also got his brass and dies but no bullet mould! He had10 cases charged with FFG and a veggie wad but no bullets seated!!! He also had an original Winchester 1885 that was rebarreled with a Ron Smith heavy barrel in 40-65. I tried to get my grub hooks on that one also, but it is going to an Auction site, probably Switzer's for the August sale.

I at one time owned the same model of Uberti, but I put a Tasco Traditional 4X scope on it with some custom made mounts a friend made.
Great little riffle, it was lots of fun- in hindsight I maybe should not have sold it LOL! it originally came from Ellwood Epps I think.
Now I have stepped back 30 years and have gotten right back into it, using my .577 Snider, .58 Hawken, and my newly acquired 40/65 Pedersoli Business rifle more than my modern stuff.

Yes, I have considered it. A fellow club member who is a competitive BPCR shooter has been trying to make a convert out of me. I have several other repop "Buffalo" rifles in 45-70 & 45-90. I'm still educating myself on the intricacies' of making accurate BP cartridges. The 38-55 that I bought from the same estate sale came with some 80 rounds of BP ammo that the previous owner had loaded. He was a meticulous reloader with all the boxes labelled with all the load info right down to the amount of compression used. i fired all that ammo and I was not impressed with the accuracy....more of a pattern than a group!!! I've read all of Paul Mathews' books as well as several by Mike Venturino. I've watched countless vids on YouTube as well. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump down that rabbit hole!!!!

It is a bottomless pit for sure, that rabbit hole!
I found out very quickly that my cases do not expand much if at all using lighter Smokeless
Loads , but real black powder does very well even with lighter loads, and this is important as l have very little Freebore in my rifle so I cannot breach seat easily .
Last evening my paper patched loafs were stringing horizontally about 12" but had less than 2 1/2" of vertical dispersionat 200 meters .
I firmly believe it is due to the very fine cross hairs in the front site, and I plan to change that today.

you might want to try a flat topped post and a 6 O'clock hold. The farther out targets get, the more easily they are obscured by cross hairs and center hold posts. A double aperature has the shortcoming that you will probably have to change aperatures as distance increases and targets appear smaller.

I plan to use one of my adjustable dipoters in there, but I do have a couple of front Anschutz globe sights and may try them .
