410. Love or hate

Ive been waiting to find a new stevens 301 410 turkey in bottomland camo but i dont think theyve made it to canada yet. I see the 20s and the 12s in obsession camo

I love shooting 410 at skeet. I own 3. One is a Browning Citori 525 Sporting, two is a Stevens 311H SXS and three is a Browning BPS. When your on em the birds break like a 12 ga. It can also be a humbling experience. Allways fun though.

Grew up hunting grouse with a Savage model 24 combo .22/.410. later on switched to .12 and .20 gauges. 2 years ago I picked up one of the Henry lever .410's and love it for grouse/skeet. I tend to keep all shots within 30yds.

When I was 12 I loved it. Killing dickie birds with a model 42 and a side by side. But I can’t remember the last time I’ve shot one now.

Mine is a cheap Turkish single shot, fits in my scabbard nicely and has a 5-round buttstock holder. It prints about 60/40 at 25m with the Modified choke, decent constriction. Definitely "hunting pattern" which is pretty surprising for a cheap bang stick. I need to take it into the field and see what it can do with some 3" #4's.

At the very largest go #6, and.. that only if it's all you can get. Better a #7.5 or 8. Big shot has too many gaps in the pattern because of the small payload. It's not a 40+ yd goose gun.

Lots of love for the 410s, started grouse hunting with one and is my favorite for the northern birds now, 20 primarily for wing shooting further south. Started reloading 410 recently too, want to try some dumbed down loads for the kids. Currently have an old cil single that's my go to (started on this one), wife's o/u Steven's, and a recent purchase for the kids a mossberg bantam youth size 410 pump. Have a project sxs Spanish whatever it is but don't think I'm motivated enough to finish.

I enjoy using my 410 o/u for rabbit hunting and it works well for that purpose. Back in the lead shot days I did take a few opportunistic ducks cleanly while working creek bottoms for cottontails. I also have tried it on pheasant a few times but with mixed results, shots must be kept under 20yrds or crippling birds will result. It’s also fun to use occasionally for skeet, just wish the shells where cheaper.

Humbling is watching you beat me with your 311 when im using a 12ga lol

Not sure what I was thinking. I bought a 12" barrel boito hitchhiker/backpacker or something. You have to smoosh your face down into it to not shoot high, but it is tiny and light and I like odd things.

were they a fad a while back?

Another hate for the .410. And a love for the 28.

Oh the 28, another fun one, I'm still in love with the 410 though. Dad and I toss up using his 101 in 28 but never do, I think it may become my southern ontario grouse gun when I get the reloader, couple flats + of AAs to keep it running for a bit for hunting. Sold the lt1100 in 28, it was a dream to shoot too with very light recoil.

Curiosity is there any gopher shooters using small bore shotguns (410) or too pricey to justify? I'm tempted to bring one west a yr around to give it a go.

I have a crazy idea of having a rifled 410 made eventually. Use pistol bullets and see how it goes. Should be unique for plunking groundhogs in the real south west ontario. I cant really think of a good use for a rifled 410 but i do want one

My grandfather knew a guy who hunted deer with rifled slugs from a 410 (back in the ol days when it was legal)

In the really thick spruce stands I use a 22/410 combo gun with a co-witnessed Burris Fastfire zeroed for 25 yards. Rifle bullet for in the clear or 7.5 shotshell for a screen of bushes. Up to thirty yards and it's full choke takes them cleanly. Mostly rabbits.
