I have a newly acquired 457 MTR, and a 25 MOA dip rail incoming, some high 1st gen 30mm leupold PRW rings. I was looking at the following scopes; DIAMONDBACK TACTICAL 6-24X50 FFP, Athlon Midas 6-24×50 APLR4 FFP MOA, Bushnell Nitro 6-24x50 Deploy MOA FFP, Sightron STAC 6-20x50 SFP MOA, I think there is a FFP STAC but if I recall it is more than 1k so out of my budget.

I have no experience with FFP scopes nor the brands other than Sightron, where I have a STAC 3-16x42 MOA. My other rimfire scopes are the leupold 3-9x33 rimfire EFRs.

My general plans for the rifles will be plinking at 100-200M and maybe try and stretch it out further, and I think I want the higher magnification. I’m leaning Athlon, but with no real ability to try any of the products out before buying them I would appreciate any advice the good people of the forum can provide.

In my mind the choice is between the athlon vs the bushnell if I want to go for more premium options and the diamondback vs the Sightron if I want to go for value. I’m certainly open to other options I haven’t come across.

I've had no issues with my Vortex scopes but no experience with the other scopes you mentioned. Moving forward, I just upgraded my trusty DB Tactical 6-24 to a Strike Eagle 5-25 with no regrets. What I like and noticed about the SE over the DBT... More elevation, 110 MOA total. The parallax adjustment is better then my DBT. The image quality is much better. And one big reason for the upgrade is the illuminated reticle. Where I shoot and I can shoot right up dusk or later the illuminated reticle helps. The zero stop is a nice feature if you don't need any more than 47 MOA of dial UP say for a PRS match. But if you want all the available elevation travel just remove the zero stop ring.

My long range setup is a 30MOA rail, a set of Burris XTR Signature rings shimmed at 20 MOA I have 97 MOA of dial up plus an additional 32 MOA of reticle hold over. More than enough for my 300yard gong and accounting to Strelok Pro I should be able to reach out to 560 yards with CCI SV.

I've emailed Vortex and they say with there scope it is safe to bottom out the scopes for long range setup and store it in that setup for long periods of time.

Check out the Element line of scopes.
I put the Element Helix 6-24x50 FFP MOA on my 457 MTR and am very impressed.
Turrets track great, 0-stop, sharp edge to edge image, 65 moa adjustment range, available in MOA or MRAD

The Vortex Venom is the best value for $$ right now in that space. I have a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16 and a Strike Eagle 5-25. The big magnification is nice for shooting ammo test groups but not really for much else from a range shooting point of view. The DBT is ok but underwhelming generally. If you are wanting to shoot 22 prs style stuff you want an FFP scope. Athlon has great reviews too, but I don’t think they have replied to the launch of the Vortex Venom with a competing offering yet.

This is just one person's review but the image quality may not be up to par.

The Vortex Venom does seem like a good option I had not considered, but I think that was because the tube was 34mm and I was trying not to buy new rings. But at the price the venom plus rings might still come under the Athlon and Bushnell.

Exactly why Vortex created the Vemon. Right in between the DBT and the SE.

I bought them from Prophet River, purchased in 2017, they are new in that they have never been out of the package, but not new in a recently purchased kind of way.

Ah I see...I ask because I am looking for high rings for a new 457 I purchased, and they are very difficult to find - none of the stores that I have visited in person or perused online have any stock and I even tried an EE WTB ad and nothing yet.

Worse case I may just buy a picatinny rail and then mount any rings on that.

What brand rings are you looking for?

Firearms Outlet has plenty of Vortex high rings in stock.

I have the athlon ares btr gen 2 and was amazed at the quality,I then bought the match pro on sale for close to half the athlon and found i liked it better.it doesn't have lume or zero stop but I would get another over the athlon ares.was looking at the venom and it was a toss up between that and the match pro,the fact I had rings for the match pro and the sale sealed the deal.we are spoiled with quality in the $1000 and less range.dont get me wrong I'm shopping for a used 4.5x27 razor for my 223,but who wouldn't.

Funny you should say that, in keeping with everyone’s case of buying something not on the initial list, I’ve gone with a bushnell match pro 6-24x50 FFP with IR

This is what I’ve observed from every vortex scope that’s passed through my hands. Optical quality, track-ability, and reliability of a scope 1/5 it’s price. I guess that’s how they can afford the no fault warranty.

Honestly,I’ve seen Simmons scopes which outperform some of the vortex that I’ve had.

It’s trash.
