Dropping your rifle during a hunt?

Several decades ago, I dropped my 30-06 in the boat as I was getting out.
All seemed fine, but when I got a shot at a moose at 85 yards, it dropped, but
because I broke it's spine instead of running the shot through his lungs.

Later test on a paper target confirmed 16" high at 100 yards. Only incident
I have had that changed impact. But I have dropped scoped rifles on a number
of occasions. I run almost exclusively Leupolds, without ever a complaint. Dave.
 
My family operated an outfitting business at one time. Seen it all, from guy running over their rifle with their truck, their 4 wheeler, dropping a rifle in the water, cracking stock while trying to pass between two tree with a 4 wheeler and... this just a few...
 
Flopped a canoe just pushing off and the rifle took a swim. I was up to mid chest in water wallowing around collecting life jackets and paddles and managed to step on my rifle and as it was an old Enfield with a one piece alloy side mount I broke it. When the mud settled and I dried out I was able to fish out my rifle. The crack was not obvious so I just dried it all out and continued hunting. For some reason I pulled the bolt and bore sighted it and I was way off. Further inspection turned up the crack and misalignment. Thank goodness for iron sights.
 
I told myself I would never tell this story but here we go.

About 3 years ago I was getting home from a hunt and was taking my rifle, jacket, pants, caller, shooting sticks and whatever else to the basement. Instead of making two trips I thought I could do it in one. Well, you guys can guess what happened next. Standing at the top of the stairs looking at my rifle at the bottom I couldn’t of been any more mad at myself. The scope was a right off but the rifle was fine. I picked up a new scope for it and never noticed any difference. Lesson learnt, always make two trips.

Dozens? That would mean at least 24. I have troubles believing anyone would continue to buy or even USE a product they've had THAT much trouble with...
 
i dropped 2 rifles with scopes in my life;

first on was a vortex scope on 6 inches of snow on the frozen ground from about thigh hight. it was visibly bent at the eye piece. had to be sent away.

just yesterday i dropped a rifle with a burris scope a from 3ft table onto a concrete floor at the range. a couple scratches on the scope and a ding on the flash hider of the rifle. i cringed as i thought for sure the scope is messed up. shot 1 round at 100m, still perfect. ran it all the way out to 500m on steel and it was still deadly. point of impact didnt move an inch. Burris makes a good product.

both scopes were in the $300 price range. the Burris weighs 2x more than the vortex. Burris also has much better glass on it. Also, i dont own the vortex anymore. they sent me a brand new replacement and i sold it the glass wasn't great, for the money Bushnell and Burris are better.

Sent two In this year all ready.

Dropped cross hairs
Not straight cross hairs
Wondering 0s
Adjustments not tracking.
Plugs falling out.
Metal flakes on internal glass.
parallax issues.

All fixed in a very timely manner and at 0 cost to me they don’t keep a warranty fella on staff because he has nothing to do.
 
Some great stories to fill in the lockdown blues! i can just imagine some of the scenerios! esp the 4 wheeler through the trees... ha ha!

some interesting post fall Shots ! its a lucky dip as to weather or not the set up is going to handle the abuse!

of course, we do not condone this action, dropping rifles,but man, as you can see y these 26 odd replies, it hapens!

Seems kind of weird to me too that a person would keep buying scopes that have given them so much trouble.
 
I had a Tasco not handle 300 WM recoil, so I replaced it. But, in all my traipsing around I haven't fallen or dropped a rifle badly enough that I remember. Must be lucky.
 
Fell flat on my back with my dad’s rem 700 243 with a leupold on the back. I was unable to adjust the scope after that fall.

I was 18 and hunting deer in a farmer’s field my dad told me I had permission to hunt on. I walked around a corner and an older man yelled at me asking what the #### I was doing so I turned around, ran, and fell down a bank. Turns out the owner of the property was just pulling my leg.

I still don’t know why I was so startled but I never went back, haha.

Tipped a trike on its side rifle landed scope cap first on a soccer ball size rock. Had to replace the cap, never lost its 0. Same gun and scope, slipped on a frosty log landed on the rifle and broke the stock 0 still good.

And you know what they would fix that for ya to if you needed them as a hammer.

It could be said it’s a testament they can even fix them rather than replace.

Brand loyalty and emotions meh.
 
I've probably sent in more Leupold scopes than any other brand. I've probably got more Leupolds than any other brand though. I'm sure I've sent in close to a dozen over the years. Like anything else, mechanical stuff fails at times.
