Was loading for my Savage 12-FV 308. I had 4 loads to test ( 9.0, 11.5, 12, 12.5 ) Using Alliant Red Dot Powder, and Berry Bullets 150grn 30/30 bullets. Mind you my gun was zeroed for 762 Nato, not any of these loads. So I guess guessed based on other targets I shot ( that I needed 44 clicks up, 12 right ) Why it is off target.

I set up 4 x 5.5" targets up. Top 2 targets I shot with 9grns, and I had a flier on the first ( which I X out )

Bottom left target was shot with 11.5 grns ( only had 5rds ) then 5rds of 12grn on the bottom right.

I went down and changed out the top 2 targets for 12.5grn 10rds test. and X out the 11.5grn because I was going to shoot that target again, with 12.0 grn load. Because the velocity difference 12.5 grns over shot the target. I noticed that I had 1 round left loaded with 12.0 grns. Now I couldn't decided which one only had 4 rounds and which had 5rds. So I just shot the original 12grn target, since it had less holes.

Now I couldn't tell if the original 12 grn target ( bottom right ) had 5 shots.

Or the Left has ( bottom left )

I never could understand why shooting a tight group is more important than hitting your target.

You failed to read, that my scope is zeroed for 762 NATO. I was using nearly 3 mils of hold off, to comp for the drop of these loads. Which using a mildot isn't the best for load testing. So I roughly determined, so I could use the crosshairs. I can insure you, I go back to my marked zero. It will hit spot on. Load development all you need is a consistent spot to aim, zeroing can come after. Why would I constantly zero for test batches? You could be there all day trying to zeroing it, because that one load, won't group.

2800 FPS VS maybe 1660 FPS, 9grns drops more than the 12grn.

Just an FYI...
Most guys when testing for a group DO NOT want the group to be on the POINT OF AIM.

If the group is on the Point of aim after a couple shots your point of aim is gone and now you are guessing as to where to hold, thus increasing the probability your group size is not accurate.

I will purposely move my scope 2" Up and 2" Right, hold dead on the vertical horizontal cross I made on the target and then shoot groups.
That way I have a nice constant place to aim that isn't full of holes.

When I am done I just move the scope back.

That makes sense, Thanks.

Hey, that's smart! How come I never thought of that? Granted, my POI is usually set 1.5" high at 100m but still a good thing to keep in mind.

Thanks for this. I have about 2000 of those bullets and they did not work well with regular rifle powder in my 30-30.

I will try again with shotgun powder.

Be intrested in seeing your results. I feel that maybe these were bunch of fluke groups. I'm going out again, and re doing them.
