Just how fast is a grizzly bear.

Yes they can out run a horse in the first 1/4 mile. That was a trot.

this is what makes me laugh about all those "bear defence" threads. unless your gun is at the ready, you may as well brace for impact, because by the time you fish it out of your pack or what not its much too late.

I had one cover 50-60m coming full tilt...dropped the fishing rod, picked up the shotgun, racked the action and blasted mud in his face 15 feet from me...he did a 90 and ran away just as fast....and that is how fast it happened....

I teach bear defence, ....... bottom line is shotgun on sling, facing me, and at the holler, "bear", turn and first shot before I count to 5, or you fail qualification!

Even so, I explain that there's a 30% chance they will be mauled! A few photos of corpses after a bear attack make them pay attention!

A bear might be faster then a horse for 14 feet but certainly not a 1/4 mile.

Another factor in its speed is the bear's mass.

This means it can cover terrain and crash right through brush and bush without appreciably being slowed down......

I've only seen 1 animal with farther apart foot impacts when running and that was a cougars prints chasing deer in light snow. Grizzly chasing moose was second in 6 inches of snow. I wish I had pictures. Too busy looking around to stop and take pictures.

I've seen a grizzly run several hundred yards up the side of a mountain at a pace that would kill a horse!

An endurance horse in shape on good feed is an impressive animal killing it in a short distance from exhaustion would be like a human athlete running the hundred m dash and falling over dead.

A grizzly can run flat out over terrain that a horse can't even attain full speed on without breaking a leg!

thats crazy man! you must be quick on the draw. 15ft and only got one shot off. thats what makes me chuckle when i hear guys talk about 8round shotguns, alternating ammo, and carrying them on their backpack. or the worst is the "birdshot" warning shot. your lucky you were able to get that shot off given the situation. like i said, unless your gun is on you at the ready the likely hood of getting off 1-3 well placed shots is unlikely.
