I usually pick up a scope or 2 when Bushnell has their rebate stuff going on. I diligently submit my paperwork and then am surprised when I get a cheque a couple of months later.

This year however, I received a pre paid Mastercard. It is a first world problem, I know.......but I would much rather receive a cheque. I can't see how producing a PP mastercard is better for them (or for me).

Anyways, I have written to Bushnell with my suggestion to stick with the cheque but for the sake of conversation, how would you feel about getting a rebate via prepaid credit card? Would you rather have a cheque?

Yes, a cheque would be better in case you want to pay a bill. Prob the PPd costs more than a cheque, too. Maybe they get some 'tracking info' from the PPd ?

This. They probably get a break on the PP card and your purchase info will be sold, plus a percentage of people will never use the full value of the card (one reason why gift cards are a good deal for businesses). When the card gets down to single digit dollar values, is it worth the hassle of having to pull out a second card to complete the sale? Some people will say no. Win for card company.

Cheque every time please

the % lost is referred to as "Breakage"
Its the same with when you close a points account and still have points left.

They usually get ~2.5% to 5% discount on face value from the card issuer. Peoples Trust is likely the backer.

Cheques have gotten surprisingly expensive to produce.

So assume you are getting $100 rebate.

The card cost them $97 plus postage ($1.50 postage) $98.50
The cheque cost them $100 plus cheque creation ($0.50) plus postage ($1.00) $101.50

that's at least a $3 savings for each customer

The underwriting company "Peoples Trust" gets all your data but its very unlikely that any data gets back to bushnell

Thanks for the technical term. I expected something like that.

You seem to know your stuff.

"This.card is issued by people's trust" is printed on the agreement.

If the cash sits on the card past the expiry date, it's gone. Will not be replaced and will no longer be available for use.

So my mission now, is to spend the $$.

Yes these prepaid cards suck. I just tried using my Bushnell prepaid card to pay for a hotel stay, had them split the bill into one transaction that matches the card's value, DECLINED. Why? Who knows. Now I'm stuck with two cards that I will have a very difficult time spending the full value of.

Send the declined card back to Bushnell and tell them it was declined, that they therefore haven't given you the rebate they promised, (which inducement was part of your reason for purchasing a Bushnell product so in effect the goods didn't perform as advertised) and point out the expense incurred in sending the card back.
