Loading for the m305?

I am going to start reloading for my m305 , I have a USGI Bolt in it, sent some brass to hungry and he says its Match Chamber:).
Loaded for plenty of bolt guns ,Start low and work up..... With semi's do you start with loads lower than the starting loads in manual? Who makes the harder primmer ? Win or CCI?

any good tips for the m305?

No different than reloading for bolt guns. Stay away from max loads though in the M14. 168gr Match bullets using 43-44gr of Varget are real tack drivers in my M14. I've never used any special hard primers either. Winchester large rifle primers seem to work just fine :D I normally use the thicker military brass (IVI) since the extraction cycle can be pretty hard on brass. Since I have a minimum SAAMI chamber, I full length re-size my brass. If I had one of the sloppy Norc chambers, I would set my full length sizing die to partially full size, i.e. set the shoulder back about 0.003" but no more than 0.005" (rather than to SAAMI minimum).

Varget is too slow and will create excessive port pressures.

First of all, the brass is most important ...
use the thicker = stronger 7.62 NATO brass if possible, and decrease loads from the .308 tables to match the decreased internal volume of the 7.62 cases.accordingly.

Any powder with proper ratio of retardents in it to optimise PORT pressure at the proper M-14 location works well in the M-14.

Way back when I used to reload for the 14s, I liked Win 748 ball powder, which meters well, and seems to get most accurate at near max loads.

But then, I personally don't reload for the M-14 rifles any more.

There's been a lot of talk on US gunboards about using Varget. I have personally shot over 1000 rounds through my M14 without any problems, using 155gr AMAXs and 168gr Hornady HPBT Match bullets. Keep also in mind that Varget is basically a more stable IMR4064. :D
 
Thanks for that article Rifledude. Sounds like the same conflicting info floating around.;)

While I agree Zediker's article is 10 years old and he doesn't shoot the M-14 in Highpower anymore, the knowledge written in that article were a combination of literally hundreds of years of competitive shooting between him, fellow competitors, and the AMU. I bow to their experience with the M-14.

As an aside, I use quite a bit of Varget in both my .308 bolt gun and my ARs -I just won't use it in my M-14. Your's and other's milage may vary.;)
