Number 1 buckshot

I think that #1 buckshot would make excellent home defense round for anyone that is worried about over-penetration, such as the pellets leaving house and posing hazard to anyone on the outside.

Inside 30 yards they mostly pass thru a young deers skull and neck

As far as common stuff like Winchester and Remington I have found it pretty terrible. When using 000,00 and #1 I haven't ever shot a coyote more than once. I saw #4 buck stopped by a couple teeth among other spectacular failures. I usually call them in as close as I can, less than 30 yards but not always of course. Anecdotally there was a massive shootout several decades ago in which one of the perpetrators was killed by a single #4 that had already gone through the back window of their getaway van. Shotshells are very peculiar and inconsistent things...

This is #4 buck at about 30 yards. 27 pellet load. Iirc 19 pellets hit it. The skull and snout was mush. The pellets that hit the neck passed thru. This is a small deer yes but the results are what ive come to expect. Ive never found a #4 buck pellet in a coyote ive shot inside 40 yards either. Pushing the range to 60 yards on coyotes ive found pellets on the off hide side or some that never made it thru the chest cavity. I never opened them up to find the pellets. Just noted more entry holes than exits while skinning

This deer was in an accident. It totalled a new pop can ford pickup. It was shot under authorization of the local police. I chased it down and got about 30 yards when it stopped and looked back. It dropped instantly

I agree shotguns have some weird quirks but ive never had reason to complain about #4 buck.
Ive had a buddy pattern broadside on a small button buck with 00buck and luckily i sent a slug thru its neck as none of the 00 bucks made it much under the hide. They could be popped out with our fingers. That was a buffalo gamebore loading. Shot was also about 30 yards
