I agree. Soap and hot water with a nylon scrub brush are miracle cures for a lot of rust. The guy who invented the wire wheel should have insisted on a triple-latched case that keeps asking the worker to use it only as a tool of last resort, and is he sure.

Boiling in distilled water is the same process used in rust bluing. It converts the ferrous oxide (red rust) to ferro-ferric oxide, which is black rust. It also softens the rust making it easier to remove. Rubbing with burlap works well.

My favourite gunsmith, Anvil on YouTube. has done wonders on worst specimens using this exact process. A section of rain gutter sealed on both ends and a steady source of heat does wonders. He finishes off by carding with a brass wheel.
