Cheap reliable 9mm that will eat any garbage steel case?

I like to test my guns with "crappy" ammo...steel or aluminum cases and I like to try ones known for having harder primers or being dirty BUT I won't sell a gun of it can't handle low tier ammo.

If they run the good/normal stuff 99% of the time I am happy and keep the gun. I also find (not counting the past few months) that the price difference in bulk isn't that much cheaper to run steel/aluminum cased ammo over brass, just saying.

Beretta M9s, CZs and HKs I have had good luck with them all *knock on wood* but they are not exactly cheap BUT can be found used and some even surplus and lots and lots of spare parts and upgrades to be found (stock up BEFORE you need them if the trick here!!!)

At one of the nearby indoor ranges ... neither. I believe the assumption Is that if it has a steel case, the core often is steel as well. I’ve just shoot cheap brass, but I’ve heard some ranges check with a magnet.

Well they are un educated. I dislike ranges like that. Ban all jacketed ammo. Because it might be all solid copper bullets
 
I bought a Norincolt Np29 1911 9mm more or less just to have a low cost 9mm to mess around with and shoot 3 gun and IDPA. I chose it due to the very low cost, durability and any part that breaks is an upgrade and is easily available. I had shot several other semi autos before hand as well as friends 1911 so I knew what I was in for. Other than smoothing up some edges here and there and adjusting the front sight it is stock and has been very reliable for thousands of rounds and several dozen matches. I had thoughts of a bunch of upgrades but if that was the case I would have bought something else, it just works. Like I said I bought it since it is the cheapest thing out there but am very impressed with it and dont really care if I scratch it up, etc.

As for your suggestion of an M&P lots of shooters use them at our matches, they work great just keep them clean.

Edit: a couple guys below suggest the GP 100 which is also my favorite.

If the OP wants a gun that is reasonably accurate. dead nuts reliable and will last him his lifetime buy a used CZ75B/85 Combat. Going striker fired the M&P or Glock or both decent pistols. The M&P beats the Glock on ergonomics. and printability. With heavy use the Gen 4 Glocks slides have a history of cracking at the nose and/or just behind the trigger guard area. Both issues were corrected with the Gen 5. The Gen 2 M&P is much improved over the Gen 1 version and is a better pistol than the Gen 5 Glock. There are even better options if striker fired pistols are concerned eg the SIG 320 series, and the PPQ and PDP both by Walther come to mind but also come with a higher price tag.

If all you are going to do is run to the range every couple of weeks for a bit of plinking get yourself a used Ruger GP-100 and a couple hundred rounds of 38 special and really find out what fun plinking is all about. Save your brass because reloading is right around the corner.

I agree about the Ruger GP100; shoot mine more than my other guns now. Ammo and Gun are not exactly cheap... unless you home-load.
