What Are Some Of The Better Base/Rings

Hey all.

On the ever growing project list, I am looking for a base and rings for a Tikka Varmint.

I am looking at, at least a 20 MOA base. 30mm rings.

I have a Near set up on a rifle. May go that route again. And can only think of TPS off the top of my head.

Suggestions?

260 Remington for long range target stuff.

Mysticplayer recommends that set up.

Are they hard to adjust? No understanding for the set up.................

Thanx Maynard.

The burris rings come with 2 piece inserts that are thicker at one "end" and thinner at the other.

When you install the inserts, the thicker part goes to the bottom in the rear ring and the top in the front ring so as to offset the scope downwards forcing the muzzle upwards. As you know with the 20MOA bases the rear part is thicker than the front which accomplishes the same goal.

The inserts were designed to allow you to center your scope absolutely with your bore in the rings, but they seem to have found the function of replacing the more expensive bases. I do run a Near Mfg. 20MOA base on my Savage but the Burris rings came with my NF scope so I thought I may as well use them.

Near bases as definately the unit. Want some good rings with that, go for some seekins or leupold Mk4.

I have used and abused TPS,Badger,Leupold mark 4,Ferrell,Warne and near

bases and rings all of them have never failed me ever, and anyone who know me knows my kit gets used hard!!!(I also bed all my bases and think every one should to!!)

I am now running TPS rings and a 20moa base from CyberK made to his specs(lower profile) and there are every bits as good as any of the others I have used and they are much lower in cost they even Ferrell!!! Drop him a PM here!!

I have two of Richard Near's bases. Outstanding and in my opinion the best out there. Customer service also second to none. As far as rings go I have a set of Mark 4's and a set of TPS Rings. Both are very good. There are alot of other excellent manufacturers out there, Badger, Seekins, USO, Nightforce etc...with any of these you can't go wrong.

Jamie - The EGW alum base is made of the softer lower strength Al - grade 6061 like the farrells. I guess you aren't hard enough on your equipment to need the stronger materials used by Near, Badger and TPS. TPS uses 7075 Al - stronger then most steels. 6061 is a good material just not as flashy as the 7000 series alum.

Isn't the EGW an extrusion? Remember you get what you pay for...

you my friend have no idea what my rifles go though:jerkit::D

I am 500 rds on to my EGW base without issue...like I said I bed my base, and tighten the rings and bases to spec never ever had issue's with any bases or rings that way(well burris rings with inserts suck donkey ####)

the EGW base is holding the very heavy Nightforce......

I like the burris rings on a range queen setup, but I wouldn't recommend them to somebody like Jamie:p I have managed to overtorque the crossbolts on a set of burris posi align rings. ended up breaking the cross bolt both times. To be fair, i probably didn't need to go as tight as I did, but that scope is heavy, and I didn't want it working loose! The rifle in question is my 17lb. .308 F/F rifle. Now the Nightforce sits in aluminumTPS lows, ontop of a Farrel base. The base is so high, along with the higher than usual TPS lows, that the 56mm bell of the 12-42 NF clears by about 3/16". Rather than recommend a manufacturer, I would get out a pencil, and the different manufacturer's specs, and figure out which combination will give you the best mounting hight. I really believe this is a huge factor in how well a person can shoot a specific rifle.
