Hey guys,

So i am in the market for a .223 rifle that could easily be transported around in a truck for target practice and varmints. I have been looking at the BCL MRX Bision with its 12.5 barrel and the Ruger American ranch in the aftermarket chassis by Indian Creek Design as sold by I run Guns. The one i go with would be mounted with a 1-4 LPVO from vortex.

Does anyone have experience with these rifles and could recommend which is the better all around short barreled rifle?

Thanks

Buzz

The Ruger is a proven rifle with lots of options to upgrade components and is better priced. I have used one and had no complaints when hunting Coyote. The BCL Bison looks unfinished when I handled one at my local store... and the fit seemed off.

Best of Luck!

I think the Ranch is just a better bang for the buck right now too.

You could get one for 600-650$ off the EE, where the BCL is 1k$+ IIRC.

No Ragrets for mine here.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

I do have a Donner Rem 700 in .308 I was toying with putting a shorter barrel on (Currently a 20") with some type of chassis. That's worth consideration too, but the Ranch does seem like its got more bang for your buck. Considering a new barrel and chassis for the rem is going to be close to $1000 I would guess.

Ruger with a MDT chassis is going to be pushing 2k where the bison is 1k

Is the ruger twice as good? I doubt it

I enjoyed my RAR 16.5" .223 when I had it. Can't say anything negative about the rifle except that any AR mag I have had some play in the magwell but functioned fine.
I planned on replacing the oem stock for an MDT chassis and swapping some of my AR parts to it. When the Bison showed up in the store I frequent, plans changed.
Ended up selling the RAR and buying the Bison and other than a extractor replacement it's been great. Also, the trigger in the Bison is nicer!

I have no experience with the IRG offering but at 27" folded it's 4" shorter than my Bison with the stock retracted. Personally, I've never been a fan of folding stocks ymmv.
The Bison is a few hundred $$ cheaper and I like the fact that BCL is making 20/20rnd mags for the it. I prefer my Bison.....

Have you checked out the MRA Renegades ? Use a lot of AR components and you can swap out uppers for different calibers and a barrel change is super easy very customizable for sure ! I also have the Mossberg mvp in a mdt chassis with a 16" barrel it uses AR mags as well its a nice setup for sure with the MDT folding adapter on it. The Renegade is also coming out with 20 round mags too so I am looking forward to that for sure.

I have my Renegade setup with a 10" 300 blackout its awesomely small and light and a 300 blackout is usable on a bit larger game like deer or black bears if needed as well

Also the bison is made in Canada. Just sayin. Mine was really nice but I had an opportunity to get something similar in 308 so I went with that.

Did BCL send you the extractor parts?

BCL requested I send the entire rifle back to complete a full diagnostic. The turnaround was a matter of a few days.
There was another Bison owner who encountered ejection issues (weeks after I got my rifle back). BCL simply sent him a new part.

I was out at a friend's farm this weekend and the rifle ejected 120rnds without an issue. I would/could have shot more but the "guys" wanted shoot clays off the second floor deck. Something that I never did before.....

With such short barrel, is Bison loud ?
