I have an 870 police magnum that I just sent to Tactical Ordnance for the Vang Comp barrel and some Trijicon ghost ring sights.

What do you guys think about using an 18 5" cylinder bore w/ vang comp for shooting trap? I don't shoot much shotgun other than a few slugs here and there at the rifle range. I just joined a range that has trap nights. They have to close the rifle range during trap, due to the layout. Id like to get as much trigger time as possible and get the most out of this place, so I figure If you can't beat em, join em!

I plan on picking up something more suitable for trap, but I want to save for something nice. Plus this could be a fun and interesting experiment.

Do people get away with using cylinder bore/ short barrelled (18-20") shotguns? W/ the vang?

Will it work? yes
Will it be competitive? Not really

Reasoning, short barrel still will pose a disadvantage, 870’s have my recoil so your shooting gets sloppier as you go and the short barrel 870 doesn’t swing as well.

Otherwise it will still brake a Clay is you hit it square.

For a casual club night, no worries.

You can golf with just a putter too. Kinda similar. If you dont care about scores and just want to shoot, go for it.

I like this analogy, cause my father will kick the crap outa me on a golf course with a 7 iron and a putter vs me with a full bag…
Better equipment helps but talent really makes the difference.

There’s a trap video of a world champion, hip shooting with a rental vs a semi pro with his custom gun shooting proper and In the end the champion won by 2 clays…

If you are wanting to pickup something nice down the road, save your money by not shooting your current shotgun much.

There will be a learning curve if you switch guns and being a novice it will take time.

Cylinder bore is cheating yourself. Go full or IM.

I see Canuck trap guns on the field, lots of features, can't speak on long term reliability.

Anyone with experience with birdshot through a vang comp barrel?

I guess I should have stated yes I had a 870 ported Vang comp… I’d say it’s equivalent to between IC and M

It’s not a great bird shot system as I stated before. It will work but it’s not great, it was designed for Buckshot with still allowing slugs to pass unimpeded and it fills that job very well.

I run a 18.5 870 regularly and sometimes drop down to 12.5. Things I’ve learned about shooting those vs a traditional shotgun is that you obviously lose FPS and your shot opens up much quicker. Pointing a traditional shotgun is easier and a more natural feel than SBS’s. As long as you understand your going against the grain and it will be an uphill battle it’ll be just fine. I’ve never hit more than 22/25 but I’m by no means a trap shooter. Love it tho. I truly believe the key to trap is in your head. If you can keep from getting excited/upset and stay clear minded your good to go. The club I regularly shoot trap still chirps me for my short barrels but it’s all in good fun. You will get the odd jerk that laughs at you on the line. So long as you outshoot them all is well in the world. There’s no better feeling than being laughed at by a complete stranger right before you beat them at their own game. Side note - stick to the 16y line unless you choke that bad boy and even then you gotta be John wick precise.

Right on. I know the vang comp is supposed to keep ypur buckshot spread nice and tight. Curious if it had a similar effect with birdshot as there isn't much info out there on it.
I'm drinitely going to try it out but a proper trap gun is in the cards very soon. Even my wife wants to give trap a try!

Thanks for all the input everyone!

If anyone looks down their nose at you, they need to give their heads a shake. Clubs need enthusiastic shooters to stay open and like or not, trap and skeet are sports in decline. Any new shooter is a good thing for them in the long run. They can look down on you for not shooting a $4000 O/U if they want, but if that intimidates a new shooter into a different shooting game, then they are proving themselves to be pompous idiots at your club.

I'm not concerned with what others think about my gun. I have expensive rifles too lol.

Just whether ill be able to make some hits with an 18" barrel. Looks like the answer to my question should be yes, I should be more than fine even without the vang comp barrel. I'm not looking to be the best here just something to do on Tuesday nights.

I will update this thread once I get it back and have a chance to shoot it. I'll take some pics of my patterns and we can see if birdshot stays tighter through a vang barrel w/ a standard police cylinder choke the way buckshot does.
