Hey!

I'm kinda new to the hunting world, and I'm looking for a shotgun specifically for waterfowl.

I currently have a mossberg 590A1, but I know that isn't suited for what I'm wanting to do. Im wanting to spend less than $1,000. Preferably a pump (More fun to me!), and I have no problem buying used, if that helps (I have no idea what firearms go for secondhand).

There are a few firearms i've been looking at;
- Mossberg 835 ulti-mag
- Benelli supernova
- Winchester SXP

If you know which of these would be best bang for the buck, flaws, or any alternatives, any help would be appreciated!

The advantage of buying new is that you'll get a barrel rated for the steel shot, which is a must for waterfowl.

And you get a variety of chokes with many models.

Out of your list, I'd go for the Benelli, but google them all to see which will service you best.

I’m a big fan of the browning BPS. Bottom load/eject is great in the rain and snow for protecting your action and it doesn’t throw shells in front of your partners faces.

I also recommend a 3.5” chamber in the case you’re after some Canadas.

Oh, thanks for the suggestion! Bottom ejection sounds cool. I'll check it out. Are 3.5" necessary for geese?

I would go with a Benelli Supernova myself out of the above choices. The stock is really nice and they can take an absolute beating. I've never used a 3.5" shell for anything but they cycle as well as anything else through the Supernova. Excellent for waterfowl and turkey.

There was such a machine not long ago in the EE for about half what the op was/is willing to spend.
Then there is the 870 WingMaster and slightly lesser quality the Remington Sportsman before the sps/express versions off the WingMaster also available in the EE.
Iirc, there is one with a modified barrel more than suitable for steel shot and waterfowl.

Yeah, i've been getting told Benelli is the way to go from multiple sources, on and offline haha! Thanks for the suggestion!

I unfortunately can't access that part of the site haha. Would love to be able to though, half price sounds like a steal to me! Might be a good idea to clear some space in the locker first myself though!

ive yet to see a 3 .5 steel beat a certain cheap 3 inch steel on a pattern board. they honestly have no advantage in steel shot, i know guys will argue but the 300+ patterns i have shot do not agree.

I was gonna say, i think 3.5 is a nice option to have, but i dont think its a be all end all. Maybe if i was having a tough day and my shoulders felt good? Jokes, of course.

Have you applied for access to the EE?
Have you checked out Relaibles web store...a site sponsor ?
Have you checked out that sporting goods store in Matsqui ???
Lots of places to look with a little leg work or some tapping of computer keys is all it takes.

Since you asking for opinions I’ll share mine. You already own one of the most reliable pumps there is. Get a good barrel with chokes and you are good to go. That is, of course, unless you came not for an opinion but permission to buy another gun? In that case, do it!

I've checked around locally, and on lower mainland websites, yes. Yes, i've applied for the EE. This is my first day on the forum. Selling firearms to a shop is brutal as they will not give you a decent price. Got offered $450 for my 590A1. No thanks.
