Looks like a 300 Allen Xpress

https: //apsrifles.com/Allen_Xpress_Wildcats.html

338LM necked down to 308 and Ackley Improved basically.

Likely a .300 Allen magnum, as previously mentioned- very fast, very flat, very hard on barrels :)

Most guys run H1000 for mid weight loads, but for very heavy bullets, the super-slow-burners like H50BMG, VV 20N29, and US869 are top choices.

I bet that guy really misses that piece of brass- most folks who shoot the big wildcats treat their brass like gold.

Must be a 7mm-338LM wildcat, as the expanded neck of a fired cartridge necked to 30cal would be a lot bigger than .305"

That measurement doesn't seem big to you for a 7mm? I just checked a fired 7mm08 case and I am getting 0.285 on my dial calipers.

Considering my 7mm got me .285, I'd expect it to be a 30cal?

So I was at the range a few weeks ago when I noticed a rather large case in the grass in front of the line. Being a curious fellow, I picked it up. On the base it says 338 LAPUA MAG. Well bingo…I shoot .338LM!

Nice find. It looks to be once fired, probably misplaced and not picked up by the shooter.

So I brought it home and promptly forgot about it until a couple of days ago. I de-capped it and wet tumbled it. I looks to be once fired. I really didn’t pay much attention to it, but I thought…why not anneal it? So I did. Then I was going to throw it into a Lapua case box with some virgin cases. And then I noticed….that neck looks a bit small…

Here it is next to a virgin .338LM case…(it’s on the left)…

You can clearly see the difference in neck diameter. I decided that maybe I should try and measure that diameter. Here’s my crude try (sorry, the caliper is all I have)…

And here you can clearly see the different shoulder angles.

And here’s a .338” 300gr SMK on that neck. That won’t work!

It looks like a necked down something. But what? Anyone care to chime in?

Did you per chance find it at the CHAS range? If so it looks like it is a 300 Awesome casing. I lost 2 last time I was there.
300 Awesome is 338 Lapua Improved and then necked down to 308 cal.
I am shooting 239 gr Chinchaga bullets out of mine and they have a velocity of 3480 FPS. And YES it is hard on barrels!! Recoil is not bad on the shoulder but is very fast recoil impulse.

Ha! I knew the guy that lost it would darn well know he lost it. Lol.

Yes I certainly did know. Forming those casings is a royal PITA. First you fire the casings in a 338 LAI, then neck it down using 3 different sized bushings, ream out the donut and then you can load it for real.
It is a fun gun to shoot at long range. At 1000 yards it only needs 16.5 MOA of elevation over the 100 yard zero.
