Great little cartridge Arch! But Remington had a recall years back on only the 700 BDL's in 17 Rem. Barrels were blowing due to a bad batch of steel. I had one and sent it to the USA through a local dealer and Remington replaced the barrel no charge. This was over 10 years ago now but I would contact Remington and they can run the serial number to see if it was one of the affected rifles and if it was rebarreled.

Mine was a pretty accurate and dropped coyotes quick!

I had one years ago & it was a sad stupid thing I did to sell it, dies, brass, & bullets
I loved it, it is one of the very few guns you can shoot & watch the bullet impact results.

Hi, how far (if you tried) can one effectively use this on coyotes. I have some wide open prarie shots and do not want to try a yardage that would not produce a good kill?

Thanks, Arch:)

The .17 Rem shoots flat and fast. I've been a bit leary about using it on coyotes, although mine is "stupidly accurate" (that is, it will shoot sub-MOA with pretty well anything I feed it).

I ran into an old timer at the range who swears by his .17 Rem. for coyotes out to 300 yards. Basically, he says load it with 25 grain Hornady's and put the rest of your guns away. We'll see this winter.

FWIW, carry a .17 bore snake to run through every 20 or 30 rounds. I haven't seen a lot of fouling, but the bore is pretty skinny and you want to keep it clean.

Hi, I found an interesting article on the 17 Remington, check it out. Couple of "good old boy's" from down South. http://www.coyotegods.com/pagepart15.html

Actually after reading the article, is what prompted my purchase of the 17 rem.

Arch:)

correct me if im wrong, but wasnt one of the big disadvantages of the .17 Rem back when it was introduced 30 years ago the lack of bullet choice?

wouldnt that have been remedied with the wide availability of the new Hornady .17 bullets designed for the HMR and HM2? and could you form cases from widely available .223 brass?
if so, sounds like a pretty neat caliber for the reloader.

I've tried the 20 grain Vmax on gophers and it shoots flat-flat out to 300 yards. As mentioned above, no idea (yet) how it works on 'yotes and I have been generally advised to stick to 25's for coyotes.

Lack of bullet choice? Yeah, I suppose, but if it kills them like a bolt of lightning and shoots sub-MOA, super-flat with virtually no recoil, what other bullets do you need?

Part of the problem with its lack of popularity may well be a lack of bullet choices, as most gunnutz are tinkerers and have a real need to keep trying to come up with the holy grail load. I think the two choices of bullet weight for the .17 Rem (or .17 Mach IV) may be "all you really need".

Having said that, I have tended to not shoot my .17 very much because it's a little boring (and I like the tinkering that reloading allows).

I've tried making .17 Rem brass out of .223 (IIRC it's based on the .222 Rem) Bottom line was I wasn't pleased with the result. So, it's factory brass for me :)

ah, just looked it up and apparently the .223 will end up a bit too short.
a lot of threads on forming it from .204 Ruger brass... although its a shame you cant find a more common source. i suppose most people would reload .204 Ruger brass for their .204 Ruger as opposed to forming it to .17 Rem.

you might run into someone who shoots a .204 and doesnt reload though, would be a nice source of brass :)
a lot of my non-reloading friends either chuck their brass out at the end of the day or just leave it in the field (i know i know, but they dont listen)

I just recently acquired one myself, and have a nice stock pile of 500 brass :)
The previous owner used a Danzac like coating on the bullets. Best load is 20gr V Max over Varget. Shoots tiny groups.

My 17 Rem is made up on a 788 action with a SS Rem barrel.....nothing fancy, Ram-line stock, 12x Leupold. Excellent 'yote medicine and it can be hauled around in any weather. Its probably one of the very best varmint cartridges I've ever used...

Arch,
I just picked up a twin to it. I have yet to shoot it, but I am looking forward to it. I shoot a lot of smaller caliber guns, I really enjoy it.
The only thing I have to do is put a tapered base on it, for some reason Remington guns sometimes have to have this done.
Sure is a tight gun, and I really like the lines.
Take care, Gunmedic.

Huh, that is the exact same rifle I have in my safe. How well does yours shoot? I have got mine too shoot .675 3 shot groups with 16.1 grns of 4227 and 25grn Hornady's. I just bought some Berger 25rn too try in it too.

Rotaxpower,
I have not shot it yet, I have just put a long range Leupold base on it today, may shoot it tomorrow. When I do I will post.
I like the gun though.
