Casting marks?
####ty casting for sure. I used to inspect cast items that we sent out for casting. Quite often the magnafux would show small cracks starting to form from holes like that in the casting.

Yep. Looks like they were having a slow start on a Monday, and the metal wasn't getting in to the Mold correctly.
Like as not, a Powder metallurgy part, and improper fill of the mold.
Like as not, you could talk Remington, or their Warranty center, out of a free replacement. It's a pretty obvious manufacturing defect, even if the part works OK as is.
I had a 597 vtr blow out the extractor and plunger. It was a new rifle and was returned. I got it back but there was that hole in the bottom of the bolt that I thought was from the gun blowing up. I was furious and demanded a new rifle or a refund. I got a new rifle and sold it at a loss. Decided to check on a buddy's 597 and sure enough it had the same hole in the bolt. Checked 2 other guys rifles and they are the same. I guess it's just the way the bolt is made.
I have a similar "flaw" in the bolt on both my 597, the VTR is about 15 years old and has seen close to 50K rounds. The regular heavy barrel has far less, maybe 2K rounds through it. No issues so far. But I clean every 1K rounds or so including the extractor and it's slot.
I’ve had a few 597s over the years. Some a long time ago: they all have that hole.
Edit: there is a thread on this at rimfire central. It’s an access hole for changing the extractor. It’s perfectly normal and as designed.
Thank you I feel better about it now but I wonder why the left it rough.
It’s just a casting. For a rifle in this price range I think expecting milled steel with filed and de-burred edges and holes is a little unrealistic, particularly when it has no bearing on functionality whatsoever.
