Here's what's going on in the English gun market.

Viewer warning: heartbreak.

Well its a $2700 gun so in my world not cheap but by some Brittish standards I guess not. These guns can be made safe for steel shot by lengthening their forcing cones , something done here but less so in GB as I would suspect it would need to be reproofed for steel to sell it. Maybe these guns will make it across the pond where they could be given a new life.

That is happening right now. Hammer Prices at English auctions are at stunningly low prices and those in the business of importing are buying and bringing them over. The vintage SxS market for low and medium grade and condition guns has tanked in the face of demand for modern O/U that can handle steel.

I looked into importing a gun I saw at auction in the UK a few months ago.

I really wanted it but ended up not bidding because the import fees were insane and would have roughly doubled the price of the gun. It ended up selling for 1300 pounds which I thought was quite reasonable for what it was but after adding in all the costs to get it to Canada it was no longer worth it.

I was quoted well in excess of $1200 CDN to get the gun from the UK auction house to the Canadian importer's location plus shipping to me after that.

Prairie guy, there are sometimes a few more reasonable options. If buying from a retail store they can frequently do this export much more reasonably than an auction house. Also a firearm can be brought to Canada ( suitably packaged) as luggage by a traveller at very reasonable rates compared with going through a broker. In the end it sometimes comes down to the value of the gun. It costs about the same to bring in a gun worth £13,000 as the £1,300 gun and is easier to justify as part of the total cost to you on the more expensive gun.

Ashcroft. Thanks for the advice.

Sadly, I have neither £13,000 to spend on a gun to make the £1000 import fees seem reasonable nor will I be traveling to the UK in the foreseeable future.

It is unfortunate that there is not a better way for the average Canadian to take advantage of the low prices for certain firearms in the UK.
