I got out with my CZ Pro Varmint in 22LR on the last weekend. I put a Area 419 rail with 15MOA and a Vortex PST 4-16x50 SFP on it.

I have high hopes accuracy wise with CZ rimfires since I bought my first 452 varmint. And I was not disappointed with this latest 457. I was knocking over steel gopher targets out to 200yds with ease. I had zeroed it at 100yds and I was using 8moa holdover for 150yds and 15moa holdover for 200.
I didn't have the ability to set anything up at 250 as the range had a big gully there but I could setup at 300. That was a different animal, rather than adjust my turrets I was trying to use holdover to hit the gophers at 300. I had to hold over so much that I couldn't even see the gopher in scope when I shot, ended up hitting it after some help from my spotter but I got to thinking about my setup.

I think I may want to change it. I think I've been bitten by the PRS type 22LR bug.

I would like to get a higher magnification scope maybe 20-24x. But should I get a FFP (been eyeing the Sightron S-Tac 4-20 or even a SIII 6-24x50) or even a higher magnification SFP scope so that I can dial it back to 1/2 power to double the moa of my scope reticule and still have enough magnification to see the little targets out at 300yds.
I think I prefer to have a solid 100yd zero and use reticule holdovers past that, so that I don't have to mess with my turrets, to be able to be quicker on target.

I know Jerry at Mystic Precision has lots of experience with 22LR setups, I would value some advice on what others are doing for optic setups on their 100-400yd precision rigs.

Thanks

Iv been playing with the CZ VPT this summer out to 300 yards, haven’t had this much fun since I was a kid!

I put on a diamondback 6-24x50 with a area 419, 30 moa iirc. Iv been just dialling and using the marks for wind. 24x has been nice for spotting shots, but I wish it had a zero stop. I was sceptical about going 24x, but happy I did now.

FFP. Use Burris XTR rings with inserts and a canted rail to give yourself a faux zero stop at the bottom of your elevation travel. It doesn’t need to be exact, just less than 1 turn to the bottom. I have a Diamondback Tactical 4-16 and a Strikeagle 5-25. I don’t go above 16X unless I’m zeroing it’s ammo testing. Athlon has done good options, although the Vortex Venom at $699 is the best option for the least right now.

Use the turrets unless you regularly engage targets of limited opportunity at various distances.

This ^ dial your elevation, that scope should work fine it has 21MIL elevation in it... but I would go with more MOA in the rail. I run 40MOA on my .22 and could use more. I dial 16.5MIL with Lapua Center-X for 300m staying directly on the crosshairs. There is still another 5 or 6 left to dial (in the scope I'm running) and 10 to hold over after that.. The ballistics app tells me that puts me past 500m.

FFP 100% keeps the same holds at any magnification, no secondary math...

I have never used a FFP scope before. I was thinking that this might be a good way to take the plunge into the FFP world. And upgrading to a 30moa rail. I do like the built in bubble level in the Area 419 rails, they are top notch!

After getting a FFP scope with a real MIL reticle years ago I can never go back to a SFP scope or shoot with some 'BDC reticle' (they seem like a gimmick) and basic 'duplex reticle' just doesn't have enough info that I want.

30MOA rail should give you just over 8.5MIL of extra dial in the scope, so with your current scope if your zero is 50% of the elevation ([21MIL x 0.5] - 8.5 = 2MIL or [75MOA x 0.5] - 30 = 7.5] that should leave your zero pretty close to the bottom spin of the elevation turret. Pretty sure those older PSTs with the smaller turrets are only 5MIL/rotation

419 makes very nice stuff, in all honesty I had a bubble level on 2x rifles and I don't think I ever looked at them after I actually started shooting.

In all honesty you are kind of lucky to just get interested in this type of target shooting now. even just a few years ago there there were NOT many options. SUB-$1K FFP scopes FINALLY coming out with decent options!

I posted my new favorite scope as the
Delta Javelin 4.5 - 30 x 56 FFP , SMR 2 (MRAD)

MRAD , FFP lets you dial 1 click = 1 cm
at any power , any distance .

The reticle is Scandinavian Match Reticles
luminated dot makes spotting your shots (.17 HMR )
at 150 mtrs a breeze .

Athlon BTR Gen2 FFP is a hell of a good bang for the buck!
Past 400Y the glass begin to be bad, but that's long range for rimfire... So it's okay!
A lot of nice features on this scope. The glass is the only downside, that makes a good scope for rimfire and NOT for centerfire.

Which model? Looks like they make a few models with BTR Gen2 in the name. Argos, Helos, Midas, Ares, Cronus.

I have a Midas Tac 5-25 on a 223 Tikka, its decent. Very similar to my gen 2 PST but more elevation adjustment and a little brighter. Would be a good scope on a LR rimfire.
The gen 2 Athlon Helos caught my eye. Seems like alot of scope for the money, particularly for rimfire, but nobody up here seems to have one.

No, this is not how a FFP works (although I think I know what you meant, you were abbreviating). As you know, Mrad is an angular measure, and MOA is an angular measure.

In the FFP Mrad scope, 1/10th Mrad click = 1 cm at 100m, but that same click results in 2cm at 200m, etc. This is the same as a SFP scope 1/10th Mrad click. A click is a click with same result, FFP or SFP.

I know what you meant was that the FFP reticle proportions that you see in the scope stay the same with distance. i.e. In a FFP scope, 1 Mrad in the hash marks at a specific zoom is 1 Mrad in the same hash marks zoomed to another power. Reticle stays the same proportions at any zoom power.

It's been a while but I finally ordered the Sightron S-Tac in 4-20x50. FFP, illuminated reticule, 30 MOA holdover that I wanted. Partly what drove me is that I really love the glass in my Sightron SIII and I compared it to a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x50 in FFP as my other choice. I still think my Sightron has the edge in glass over the Vortex and also over my Gen 1 Vortex PST 4-16x50. I'm excited to get it on this rifle and try it out this spring. With ammo prices the way they are I'll prob be shooting it a lot more.

Is there a reason you don't want to 0 the scope for 200y instead, and use holdover from there? At closer range you can hold-under instead.
