Don, Mike and Liz, the buck has fallen {Weight update}Pic added

I'll believe you. But I kinda think you had buck fever :D

I've shot plenty, and I assume your crossbow will do 260+

My compound does 255, so slower than the average crossbow. In a 50kph crosswind, my arrows do not drift more than 4" at the 30m butt. Keeping in mind normal arrows are a lot longer and have a greater surface area for wind to act on.

But. Weird #### happens. Anyone who shoots a bow can attest to that :D Glad you got him

If it's cool enough to hang, there's no need to take a deer to a butcher. Save the money and buy beer instead ;) It takes all of about an hour to completely bone out a buck (if you go slow) After it's boned, cut the loins into steak, slice the hinds into jerky meat, trim & grind the rest for sausage/burger meat. The whole process from hanging in the garage (skinned out) to wrapped in the freezer takes about four hours by one's self. And if you leave some of the cuts in roast size, it's even faster and a pleasant way to pass an afternoon. Helpers (with beer) speed the process up. Keep the BBQ going so you can nibble while you work (and drink beer) It's fun, give it a go

And congrats on the deer...we still need pic's ;) :D

I agree... I quit going to the butcher a few years ago and have never regretted it.

I do the loins, then the hind quaters get turned into roasts, the rest is bagged and then ground up for sausage at a later date. (When everyone else is ready)

Congrats on the deer and thanks for the story!

We do our own at deer camp, but at home, I have no grinder.
No heated garage either.
At .90 a lb though, I may soon have to change that.

As to buck fever, nope, I was cool as a cucumber for that shot. I've experienced buck fever before, not this time, everything I did was as best I could under the circumstances.
The shot placement, though not where I planned turned out quite well.
As a rifle hunter for the most part, and a short range one at that, wind usually isn't a concern for the shot, and I never even gave it a thought.
I am still a bit confused as to why he didn't take my scent though, but, the row of trees may have changed the direction of the wind close to him.

As to why he walked so close to me, I think, with the crossbow in front of my head, and me kneeling, I may have looked a bit like another buck to him.
They would not be used to seeing humans there at this time of year.

we have to introduce you to our butcher in the bobcageon area..if you have not yet brought the deer in to your butcher yet..send dumbdawg a pm to get the addy ,as i dont have it here now..
its about 65 for a smaller deer and 75 for a bigger one, thats cut and wrapped and frozen if needed..
then again if your half ass good on butchering..we have a saw with all the goodies

Or better yet...load the deer then go pick up dumbdog, mommabear & fogducker and come on out to my place for a visit :D We can cut up the buck, shoot some coyotes, drink some brewskies :) Afterwards, you fine folks can swing by a bison ranch and shoot a nice eatin' size buffalo or two for the trip home. Should only be a 30 hour or so drive one way  ;) :D

Congrats. Good story and a fine hunt. I heard that they are dropping the antlers already. Seems a little early in the year, but what do I know?:D

sounds like a plan to me

You buying? :p

Well, i still don't have a weight, but, it went in to the butcher today, the locker was full of deer, and mine was the largest by far, according to my wife, who took it in.

she was only trying to make ya feel better about yourself:p
sounds like the eight pointer i took a few years back but he was tender than hell

Well, I picked up the meat today.
I got 125lbs out of it.
I didn't mention it before, because I thought it was BS, but, I took a girth measurement of the deer, before I skinned it.
Then checking with a chart, it tells me that the live weight for a 45.5 inch girth should be somewhere slightly in excess of 265 lbs!
The chart also said I would get 120 lbs of meat. So I guess it was bang on.

Anywho, The landowners will get half of that, and half the bill for cutting.
Hopefully, it's not as tough as I fear it will be.

125 lbs fits in two boxes, each about thirty inches long, and a foot square. Sure doesn't look like much.

Well Bob That's cool. Next year we should try set up a couple hunts. I just got my ole triton bow back a couple weeks ago. So I will be practiced up. For next year. Now we just have to talk dumbdawg and foggy into some archery equip. Then we would have a great gang!

Dave.
