Smith and Wesson 686 Silhouette value

I have a 686-3 with silhouette sights that's I'm considering selling. I haven't seen this particular model show up very often so just wondering if it's an uncommon model. The only damage are 2 pits under the barrel that I assume was used for weights by the previous owner.

Big S&W revolver fan, love my 686s.
These type of sights were common for silhouette shooting way back in the day, but I don't believe S&W ever actually produced a model with factory sights like yours; I thought they were all aftermarket additions. I could very well be wrong tho, as my wife oft points out whenever I am.

These aren't too common, as I don't see them coming up for sale often.
Might want to check the S&W forums re: value.

IMHO, they're pretty fugly, but to each his/her own.

I never made any use of the different sight settings myself for the shooting I was doing. I'll check out some other forums as well ... but at the end of the day it's only worth what someone is willing to pay ;)
 
I am pretty sure that it is a factory silhouette model. I'd say that the marks under the barrel lug would detract from collector value so I don't have a good idea of its value. Maybe $750? You could start higher to see if you get any bites.
 
S&W wanted to sell their new 586/686 series revolvers to the Silhouette crowd so they incorporated a 4 position front sight on the barrel for them. Mostly 6” barrels, there were a few 8 3/8”’s too. Many PPC shooters bought these fine revolvers to shoot the 50 yard courese-of-fire. However, the downside is S&W’s 1”-in 16” slow twist rate.
The 586/686 series revolvers with the adjustable front sight are highly desirable as they have no MIM parts, had better production values than current stuff IMHO & had the OEM highly desirable *come-bottle* oversize walnut grips. If your 686 is in better than 85% condition, it’s easily worth $900.00.

I don't think any 686s came with Coke Bottle grips...I had a 1985 vintage 686 and it had the usual 1980s vintage Target Grips, which, while they looked nice, I didn't care for at all. They were too slippery but also with too sharp checkering, and they were too small at the top, too big at the bottom. I was happy to replace mine with Ahrends (which are sadly no longer available) or VZ grips.
 
That four position front sight is factory. I shoot with a guy that has that same gun, and my model 29-3 Classic Hunter also has that front sight. I would say that the above is correct in that somewhere between $750 and $900 seems about right to an interested buyer.

Awesome, thanks for all the information guys.

I haven't fired it in years, it has a sweet trigger and was super accurate. I just don't have the time to go to the range as much anymore (damn kids lol) so I'm scaling back to a couple calibers that I tend to use most often. Hopefully someone else will give it some use.
