Best non-res SHTF gun?

SKS, possibly the "Vz-58l" but I don't think it can compete with the SKS reliability wise (it's advantage is the 30 round mags).

With an SKS-D, that disadvantage is removed.

Hi:
I think the point on the thread is best non-restricted - because many don't have restricted or prohibited guns to begin with. So if you don't have them before something happens - you're not likely to get your hands on one afterwards...

Best choice would be something that every other hunter has ammo for. You could always barter for more. SO that would likely be the major hunting calibers (.30-06, .308, shotgun rounds, .22). Really just about anything that YOU have with LOTS of ammo for (like 7.62, .223). Or have all above just in case.

Definitely a marine magnum with mixed slug/shot loads. When that thing goes bang people tend to listen.

My USP would also be pretty decent for it's concealability, but maybe we have different opinions on what exactly is SHTF :p

I'd say a M-14S or a Tavor for myself.

On a side note: These SHTF threads are valuable. Take 28 Days Later for example. The Brits got wipped out in that movie....why...no guns. I know in Dawn of the Dead pretty much the same thing happened in the States, but I don't count that movie as a realistic zombie scenerio for the entire US, take Texas for example....those Texans would wipe the floor with them zombies.

It does in the sense that in the case of a SHTF scenario our dear old Government would immediately seize all the restricted and prohibited firearms they know of, while leaving the subsitance hunters (who use non-restricted firearms, and those who own "antiques" not in the books) relatively alone .... That's me theory anyway.

"Those who beat their swords into plow shares will end up plowing for those who didn't"

If SHTF occurs, there will be no LE or gov. body. In either case, only a fool would willingly hand over his means of protection.

Restricted or not is irrelevant. What you own is what is available regardless of classification. Some on this site have no firearms, others have too many to choose from and would probably starve to death before they decided which one to use.

Most hunters rarely keep any serious quantity of ammo on hand. Although having something in most or atleast a few of the popular calibres is a wise idea. Personally I'll stick with my AR(I know its restricted) and a quality pump shotgun to meet the criteria of this thread. Shotgun ammo is widely available, anything in 3" or under will work and the shotgun can be used for semi precision shooting, game birds as well as two and four legged critter.

Very true - I loved my SKS-D. However, the Vz's have other advantages (shorter, lighter, more positive/intuitive mag seating, bolt hold-open) over the D, and according to the Czechs, the guns seem to be pretty reliable, the occasional gremlin aside;) I'd take the 58L over the SKS-D

A 16" lever action carbine in .357 Magnum. 9 shots beats 5 round magazine. Get a 80 round rifle bandolier from Marstar and you're set.

Non restricted. ;)

I'll get a laugh no doubt, but my vote is for:

The humble 10/22

You can have more ammo than you'll ever need for next to nothing, and you can carry 2000 rounds without breaking a sweat. The .22 will take most game you'll want to eat.

They're (10/22's) cheap, easy to fix, modify to your hearts content....and in their 'stock' form, as innocuous as you can get.

Sure its not as tacticool as some other rifles, but it's not a fashion show...it's survival

SKS hands down. Ride her hard, put her away wet, let her rust, she just doesn't care a keeps right on trucking. Not the most powerful, or accurate rifle in the world, but that thing just refuses to die. Second choice would be a Remington 870 in 12ga, eats the world's most versatile ammo can can be reloaded for if you need "custom" ammo for her. 3rd would be an Enfield in whatever flavor floats your boat.

+1 on the SKS, for the same reasons, plus cheap and plentiful ammo allows you to stock up before TSHTF.

+1 on the 870. No further comment is necessary. And a Mossberg 500 would do just as well.

I'll go with the Ruger 10/22 to round out the battery, though. Incredibly cheap and plentiful ammo that's also ultralight, plus legal 25-round mags available anywhere, means that you can go bopping around with a backpack full of mags all day long.

Id have to 10/22, 870 and an XCR in that order. 10/22 you can waste as much ammo as you need. 870 for when S realy HTF. XCR when your in control and you Know whats around you.

And dont forget about the pocket full of rice yummmmmm :D
