Pay attention to detail. Try to set decoys the way you see the birds using the spot you're hunting. Try to get as close to the spot as they want to be, preferably right on it. If possible get the wind and rising sun at your back. If you can't do that set up to cross wind them into the spread. Create landing zones in the decoys. Place the decoys in family groups within the mass. Keep your movements to a minimum and keep your face from view in the blind. More opportunities are lost due to someones big pink face standing out in a sea of camo.

Oh man, thanks for the advice! I bought a balaclava just in case hahaha.
 
I’ve never hunted fields. Haven’t been able to get permission to one yet. But one learning moment for me was in a small waterway. I had set my decoys out in a loose C shape leaving a pocket off to my front left to easily swing up on the birds coming in. Didn’t realize I had left a pocket far front and to the right. Sun comes up and flight after flight of birds land where? That pocket far front and to the right at about 70-80 yards from me. I had maybe one bird come in close in the spot I had intended.

Looking forward to this year and hoping to get more time out :)
 
Local honkers are tough to work this season. My harvests have been all adult birds. I think the drought either resulted in a poor nesting effort or the goslings mostly got killed off due to predators from a lack of water to provide safe cover. On a good note the Specks are arriving and sloughs are starting to fill up with pintail, widgeon, gadwall, teal and a few mallards. Should be good in a couple weeks after I get back from work for days off...until then the hunting is on hold for this fellow. Pics are from my hunting partner who is on days off and pounding birds while I'm in camp working....he isn't making the time here any shorter!! :( ;)

Nice work, guys. I went out for a quick hike to a local pond Friday--heard a goose honking away while I sneaked through the woods, so I loaded up and he was gone when I got to the pond. Four days into the season, they were already pretty skittish. He must have heard the shells going in the gun.

I'm currently living at inlaws and there are 50+ ducks here every day (which I can't legally shoot until OCT 1) and well over 100 geese, which my father in law thinks he will bag on October 1 when water levels rise? Instead of just shooting them now.

Some people are good hunters and some are not, and cannot be converted.
 
I got out a couple of times this week and really had fun. Birds decoyed nicely and even managed to turn a few flocks...I still have lots to learn but after several years at this I’m finally starting to feel like my success isn’t all just dumb luck ;)
