Putting a pup down

Well as a hardcore dog lover(no lude comments please) I must say I am with the other dog lovers on the site. It is worth money to save a dogs life, If it is the right dog, and I have poped a few that were not the right dog. And as for the comparison of people to dogs. Dogs are animals, humans are beasts, dont forget it!

Come on guys, this was (is) a personal decision for the OP.

I love dogs just as much as the next guy... but to slag the guy for putting his dog down is not cool. It's his choice to make, plain and simple. I've put some big cash into an older dog of mine, but that was after 13 years of living with the fella by my side. If my new one (three years old) would need some hefty medical procedures... im not so sure I would shell out. Add to that the fact that the poor guy will become a tripod... well...

Now I know dogs can and do live well on three legs, but it's not our call to make, and we should not judge.

I understand you pain Mumptia. I recently spent over $1400.00 fixing up my little buddy ... a Pomeranian. Not a hunting dog, but nevertheless a good "lil bud. Cheer up if possible, you are doing what's right....:)

Well I guess I'm just one of those soft-hearted f**ks that wouldn't and hasn't blinked twice at an $800 vet bill. Spent a lot more than that on mine and don't begrudge a cent.

As noted before, lots of dogs get by just fine with three legs. It's not life threatening and your "quality of life" argument rings hollow.

So how much are you saving? The vet doesn't euthanize for free. $700 bucks? I hope it's worth it to you.

Clay buster,

$800 for the operation + the $400 I have spent in the past two weeks on meds and check ups

$85 to euthanize.

Mumps

Well the family meeting has spoken and you've made your decision. I'm sorry for your loss'.

Being that you've posted this private matter I'll assume you are all right with comments. Please don't get another dog unless your neighbour stops trapping and/or you don't let your dog roam.

Mumptia,

Sorry to hear, must have been a tough decision.

Although, there is some solace in the fact that we now know Gitrdun's got a pomeranian.:p:eek:

You know its amazing. I would venture to guess that many of us have spent well over $800.00 on some of our favourite guns, I know I have. Expenditures like this, we don't think twice about and yet none of these guns have ever given me the pleasure or companionship that my dog does. I am sorry, but owning a dog means accepting the potential financial responsibilities that go along with it. Too many people own dogs, but cannot afford or choose not to give them the treatment they may potentially need, this is very unfortunate and I can't help but wonder if you should even bother getting another one, should you go ahead and put this one down just for this reason.

Applaud his attitude ? leaving the dog out in the temperature he described ?

Wow what a great attitude.....maybe he should have put on a pair of boots and a coat and looked around....a dog in a leg hold trap is sure to make a noise that could have been heard.........at least he could have made an attempt to find it ...

AHHH well,

Since you seem to need details here goes a few,

I looked around my acreage (6) by foot in blowing snow that just about filled my tracks as I walked.

I come to find that the traps Blue got caught in were 1/4 mile away in an area that I did even know had traps set. Hearing it set off? Nope.

The kids were calling every 15 minutes before bed time hoping it was just turned around and needed a sound beacon.

You are a hard ticket Coltfan. Sure hope your perfect ways solve any dog problems you might have in the future.

My perfect ways sure didn't help me.

rustysdream typed "Vets (and some other professionals...) should be ashamed for charging ridiculous amounts of money and make people feel bad if they hesitate getting the services."

dude, get a grip, as the son of a vet (and acquaintance of other vets) i can almost guarantee that the vet would arrange a payment plan to cover the cost of amputation.
i worked in my dads clinic or was called in for night emergencies pretty much my whole life numerous times there was a hushed conversation in the back room with my dad and no money changed hands. to this day my dad has NEVER had one of those cases pay him back whether it took a month or 7 years.
pets are a responsibility that require work and attention.
my feeling on reading the OP is:
-where was your fenced yard
-can you prove the dog was caught in a trap or just laying blame soemwhere else
-many many dogs have lived happy productive lives as tripods (i've also seen 2 legged dogs in pretty much any combination including a wheeled carriage for the butt)
-dogs that run "free" in the country get shot and letting them do so is irresponsible

sorry no sympathy here (well some for the dog)....

Not looking for any. Was posting for conversation to get it off my chest.

The dog is now down and my family and I were content with our decision. They had a good bye scratch this morning and we had a good bye prayer at supper.

Not too concerned about being flamed. Putting a dog down doesn't make me a dog hater it just leaves me to make hard decisions and some times they are not popular plain and simple.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

That`s ####ing cold buddy.I agree with everything coltfan and claybuster have said.
I have $100 you can have.
Now the difference is $615.
Ask yourself is he worth it now?
YES I will do EMT

I deleted some harsh comments, no need for them I guess.

That sucks really bad I cannot judge your decision to have the little fella put down because i am not in your shoes.

But I at the same time I COMMEND YOU!

many people would be at war with their neighbors over this but I think you handled the whole situation with a lot of maturity and respect that is becoming increasingly rare in this country.
If everyone took the same approach and responsibility that you have we would be better off for it.

cheers......things always get better dude
