Putting a pup down

Putting a dog down doesn't make me a dog hater it just leaves me to make hard decisions and some times they are not popular plain and simple.
No, it doesn't make you a dog hater.

It makes you the kind of man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

I've done it....because I loved that dog :(

"Sir" had cancer, was constantly in pain and had to be put down. Sir also was terrified of the vets. After it was established that he had to go, I asked myself: "If it was me...how would I want to go? Terrified at the vet or would I rather be having a good time then "lights out"?

I owed him too much to have him die in a strange environment scared out his whits...I wouldn't want to go out that way. Spent a couple hours playing and saying goodbye, then threw his favorite ball one more time......

Somtimes you gotta take the hard line for those you love, even though it's tough for you.

Been ther WW,done that, for pretty much the same reasons you cite, just last year.My 9yr old Springer "Buzz" had an inoperable tumor that grew to the size of a tennis ball in 2 months on his anus and he was obviously suffering in pain and discomfort.Taking him out for one last hunt and fulfilling the promise I had made between him and myself years earlier was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. That lil dog was always at my side, went everywhere with me day in and day out, shared some of the best hunting days of my life, and I referred to him as my 1st born as he was older than my 2 children. After the deed was done I'll admit I got loaded and cried like a baby, swore off dogs forever and felt like I lost a child, but I had done what I had decided long before was the right thing for me to do and not let some stranger in a clinic do what I felt I owed Buzz. It's been a year and a half now and the kennel is still empty, but the kids are after me to get another dog and I think I just might as time heals all wounds, and hard as that was,I'll probly do it again some day?

Coltfan and the rest of you candyasses ,why don't you go buy some steroids or something and grow a pair.Who da F are you to judge anybody?Mumps decided what was right for him and you Aholes wanna kick someone while their down. Not everybody enjoys a 6 figure income and some things are more important to some people than spending good money after bad on a gimpy dog.And before you accuse me of being some cheap-ass hillbilly with a rifle,I'll have you know that I spent over 3 grand on operations for Buzz after he got out of the yard as a 7 month old pup and was run over by a Harley, breaking both femurs and dislocating his hip.Stainless steel rods through both femurs and protruding above his hips, and me wrapping a towel under his belly to hold him up so he could walk on his front feet and go outside to do his business,I cared for that dog until he healed, but spending another $1500 on an operation that he had little to no chance of recovering from in the end wasn't happening.Paying a stranger $100 to do my duty wasn't in the cards neither.

Hard choice to make. Not sure what I would have done. I know I'd think long and hard about it.. which I'm sure you have done.

Cudos to you for not ripping the young kid a new one...

I also hope that not everyone talks in person like they do on the internet.

Well the way I see it is it is your fault the dog is in this situation. If it we're me I would have paid the 800$ and get his situation fixed. I knew someone that had a 3 legged dog, walked and ran along just fine.

Truely sad. Please don't get another dog if you can't take on the task of keeping that dog safe. Sorry to sound so harsh and blunt, but I have a soft spot for animals, and this situation is truely your fault, not the kid that placed the trap. Should have went out there and looked for your dog that night, even if it ment searching till the sun came up.

I couldn't even imagine having my dog run away in -30 weather and actually go to bed and sleep at night :(

Well as a balless, candyass who needs steroids let me say that you gave your dog a chance at life when he was hit at 7 months old.
Look at all the good years you would have missed out on if you had not been willing to spend the $1500.
For $685 mumps could do the same thing.
As for that 6 figure salary, sure wish I had one.I just sold a gun to buy a boat what type of person would I be if I refused to do the same to save a friend?
Regardless of what is said here Mumps is going to do what he wants and it sounds like he will have no problem living with his decision soooooo.......
My sympathy goes to the dog who could live a perfectly healthy and long life with 3 feet.

Hmmm,I do.

Coltfan,Claybuster,Northwoods,Hicaliber,Johnny.......anybody else notice a pattern here?

Every f'n one of these "holier than thous" is from gungrabbing,Lieberal lovin,PETA embracing Ontario. No doubt a few of these clowns are from the center of the universe, aka Toronto, and have no idea how life is in the real world.God forbid you should ever hit a deer on the DVP while enroute to your fancy gunclub with your Glock securely locked in the trunk of your beamer.

"Oh dear...what a dilemma, whatever should I do...where's my blackberry?I gotta text the vet right away and save this poor creature"

Don't worry girls, you can leave your peashooter in the trunk, wouldn't want ya to get messy.
I'll be the guy in the primer and rust colored pick-up that stops and bashes it's head in with a tire iron to put it out of it's misery.;)

There is medical insurance available to pay the high cost of medical care for animals....It is well worth it for those that don't view pets as disposable when the care costs escalate.

Do what ever makes you feel happy, with regards to your pets.

Some people view their pets as their children, others view them as animals that they like alot.

I won't pass judgement on others decisions regarding their viewpoint in matters such as these.

PS I've had a few lambs that were orphaned and/or injured. Brought them in the house to keep them warm, and bottle fed them as they would have surely died had we not. They always would run over to us first after they rejoined the flock. They were all very friendly, very likable animals.A few we have kept for breeders, but when the time came, I shot all the males in the head and butchered them. Different people live in different realities.

There is a fundamental issue that a few here have allowed their self righteousness to blind them from seeing.

I'll type this really slow, hope it helps.

His neighbor was trapping coyotes 1/4 mile from his house, that means there are coyotes 1/4 mile from his house.

Sometimes .......they.....even......come........closer.......than.....that!!!

I know a lot of you think coyotes only eat roadrunners, but that's just tv. I know, I know, that is scary and all, and it doesn't happen in the suburbs, so it is easier to pretend this never happens. But I live in the country and have lost lots of animals to coyotes, it is part of country life.

Mumps, give the insurance company a call and get a quote on doggie medical insurance on a tripod dog in coyote country.

I just can't get the picture out of my mind of a 3 legged puppy hopping along, scared witless, while a couple of coyotes are closing in on it. Those stupid animals would never be wary enough to target a 3 legged dog would they?????. Especially after you just spent a grand saving it's precious life.

Don't be an ####### mumps, spend the coin, save the dog. Explaining to the kids how the pup was eaten alive will be a good life lesson for the young'uns.

Mumps,

You made the right decision. I didn't see anyone offering to take the dog themselves and getting it fixed and keeping it.

And no, I didn't offer either. Because he was your dog. You decided what was best and did it.

Too bad the world is so short on men that can make the hard decisions. You are one of them.

The kids will get over it fast. Mine did.

Do it for the young ones man, My parents had a dog, who grew big and old, and was put down when I was two. We didn't get another dog until I was 17. Way too long. And you know something, That dog will never be the same as your old dog, but I can guarantee that you will love it.

Sorry man, but if there were coyotes out and about that close to home (there are here, and I live in the middle of Calgary) I would'nt let my dog get to far out of my sight. and i don't. A young pup isn't going to find it easy to defend itself against a pack of coyotes, even if it has four legs... Not saying what he did was wrong, just saying, that argument isnt a good one.

AHHH well,

Since you seem to need details here goes a few,

I looked around my acreage (6) by foot in blowing snow that just about filled my tracks as I walked.

I come to find that the traps Blue got caught in were 1/4 mile away in an area that I did even know had traps set. Hearing it set off? Nope.

The kids were calling every 15 minutes before bed time hoping it was just turned around and needed a sound beacon.

You are a hard ticket Coltfan. Sure hope your perfect ways solve any dog problems you might have in the future.

My perfect ways sure didn't help me.

You posted this for a reason...looking for sympathy or support for your choice, I don't know which...maybe both.....You can't expect everyone to agree with you.......

Maybe post the whole story in the first place so you don't sound like a guy that just out a dog in that kind of weather.

Ontario is a big place. Something tells me you've never been more than 100km's away from where you were born.

Christ, i've never seen CGN'ers go at each other like this. Everyone should cool it, realise that people handle situations in different ways.
Maybe this thread should be locked if it doesn't calm down...

I'm thinking you're right.

I can't see this thread going anywhere positive, and will just make things worse. Those who still want to fight about it, take it to pm's.
