CZ457 Manners and Vortex Viper PST gen2 5-25

Hi,

Just got my CZ457 in Manners stock (thanks to Wolverine for the great sale!) and have tried to mount my Vortex Viper PST gen2 5-25 but I have found the scope is sitting way to high, likely 1/4 - 3/8" high. Using a MDT 20moa rail and tried three sets of rings, a Burris XTR signature set (the ones with the plastic inserts) and a Leupold set that were about 1/8" lower both made the scope way to high. I also have a set of Vortex tactical rings of the low variety but they are too low, the eyepiece hits the rail.

I am wondering if anyone is using this scope (or something of similar size) on their CZ457 Manners and what mounting solution they are using.

I wouldn't jump straight to a cheek rest to raise the comb height. I would want to get the scope as tight as possible to the barrel first. Then if you still need it I also like the Titan cheek rest. I've got one on my Ruger American Ranch.

The stock has no impact on the scope height so you can broaden your search to any 457 with a rail the same height as yours. Since you already have the rifle, rail and scope, you could stack coins on your rail up to the point your objective lens clears the barrel by a 1/4" or whatever you're aiming for. That way you know what height ring you need.

Keep in mind, some ring manufacturers list measurements from top of rail to underside of scope tube and others list it as top of rail to middle of scope tube. The first one means match the height of your coins and the second one means the height of your coins plus half the diameter of your scope tube.

The first part of that video he explains that he can run his scope that high is because he's using a chassis with an adjustable cheek rest. OP is not running a chassis and the comb riser you suggested is not readily adjustable.

My old set up: 30 MOA Rail and 1.25" 30mm XTR Signature rings. A very comfortable setup.

New set up: 30 MOA RAIL and a 1" 34mm XTR Signature rings. Still comfortable.

I say keep your setup and just add a cheek riser.
 
Thanks. Not to go off topic but it's a threaded 16.5" Lilja barrel with a headspace of 0.042" that is 1/2 MOA or less with my batch of Rem/Eley Match ammo. The barrel tuner is from reddnobb. This rifle setup is 1/2 MOA or less without the barrel tuner.
 
I have the vortex g2 5x25on a mdt 30 rail and have had 3 different rings including 10moa burris high rings and vortex pro med and mdt high on a cz 457 mtr factory stock(stock has no bearing)and they were all fine.mdt high worked the best for me,but I don't like to put to much of my cheek on the rifle.
 
Hi everyone, thanks for the great comments. I watched that first video and the Titan cheekrest does seem like a viable option, though I would prefer not to alter the stock and just figure out a way to lower the scope. I am wondering if a set of low rings that mount directly to the 11mm dovetail, opposed to a rail + picatinny rings, would be a good option. Negative of that is no option to have a cant (ie 20moa) to aid in the long shots.

If you do decide to try a Titan cheek rest, you can attach it with double sided tape or even stick on velcro if you need it removable to get your bolt out. Saves you from drilling holes.

It may not be visually appealing at first but try making your own cheek riser and tape it on or check out Amazon for options. Google search and images is your friend ideas.

If you have access to long range shooting 200+ yards I wouldn't give up on the MOA rail and XTR Signature rings combo. Have the MOA and not need it than need it and not have it.

This then you know your comfort point and work from there..
 
Hi All,

Tried using the low vortex tactical rings (21mm from base to bottom of tube) and they seem to work OK. They are so low that the scope magnification ring is too large to fit over the rail but surprisingly the eye relief is fine. Still might try some rings that mount on the 11mm dovetail rail but not in a rush.

sounds like you already have it figured out... but as already stated I wouldn't worry about the scope height as long as you have a decent comfortable cheek weld, just know what that height is so you can have that info in your ballistic calc...

I have used a cheek riser out of grey foam 'pipe wrap' and duct taped it to the stock, make it as thick as you like... cheap easy and works.
 
I have the same problem with my CZ/manners. I’m using the area 419 rail with low vortex rings and a diamondback 50mm. If you happen to stumble upon some 11mm dovetail mounts, I’d really like to hear how they work out.
 
Hi, here with a short update. Purchased a set of Vortex Pro rings in LOW and MEDIUM. The LOW are listed as centerline 0.9" above the pic rail and with my scope (which is ~0.9" radius at magnification adjustment ring) the are a hair too short! DARN! The MEDIUM are listed as centerline 1.0" above the pic rail and my scope fits fine, though I wish there was a version 0.95" above the centerline. Using an MDT 20moa pic rail that clamps to 11mm dovetail, it is the lowest clamping pic rail I could find.

I am going to try these MEDIUM rings out but I am 50/500 they will work. It is too bad Manners/CZ didn't put the adjustable cheekpiece on this stock, otherwise it is amazing!

Yikes...did you ever find something that works...I am debating getting the exact rifle but now I am having second thoughts....
