If the dressed bone-in weight of a deer is 150 pounds (neck, ribcage, back and hind legs) what would the live weight have been?

What do hide and guts weigh?

I don’t know a deers ratio specifically but a lot of animals are around 65% hanging weight of live weight. If someone doesn’t have the approx deer percentage you could run with that, always give or take, of course.

Knowing the weight of a gutted only animal, add 30% to that weight. Therefore, 30% from a 150 pound gutted only deer= 45 pounds. Total weight= 195 pounds.

The animal in question was skinned too.

I'm aware that it's in multiple pieces, in return, makes it very difficult to calculate the live weight. Best to weight it on a scale ASAP or after gutted...........there is no formula that I know to find the estimate, let alone, exact weight of the animal.

Living as close to our hunting area as we do I have weighed several mule deer in the "round" and again after gutting and skinning. The bigger mule deer - say over 275 pounds live weight - tend to agree with the 65% rule posted above with their hide, head, lower legs and organs removed. The smaller deer - does and young bucks - have been 55% - 60% hanging compared to live weight.

If I had to guess I would say your 150 pounds of dead deer meat was around 210 on the hoof.

Thank you 'Boo.

Thank you 'Boo.

Thanks for the picture you sent me!

Just by the photo alone I would guess that stocky boy would indeed break 200 pounds. I suspect it has large traces of true mule deer in it's black tail ancestry which is very probable in areas where the 2 species overlap.

Always a pleasure to chat 'Boo. Perhaps one day I'll pass through again and we can visit.

MD what a hog.....
you should post a pic
as far as blacktails go , that's a trophy in anyone's book.
He scores as a blacktail where you got him but my guess is he is one of those plus sized ones that hybridized with fraser basin mule deer
From the pic you sent he is in the top 4 for antler size for any of my friends that have hunted that spot.
Congrats !
