I acquired a Type 81 drum mag theses days and also sourced the proper internal from a fellow gunnutz to replace the bad chinese blocking method.. After watching a video on youtube, i put a 1/8, quarter inch long rivet about 25 mm from the mag neck edge(see picture) That indeed blocked the follower but after some testing, i found out that with very little effort, the follower could pass beyong the rivet. Using a longer rivet at the location wasnt possible because would interfer with the pin holding the follower on the wheel and preventing full travel to the magazine neck.

So the other way around was to put a 1/8 half inch rivet at about 65mm from the mag neck edge(see pic) so the follower pin would inded stop at the rivet. This way, the mag is properly blocked to 5,5 cartridges, just perfect.

Original pinning location with quarter inch long rivet at 25 mm from mag neck edge..

proper location for pinning with half inch long rivet. Note the the follower pin rest securely against the rivet. Rivet should be at 65mm from mag neck edge.

i like your idea but measuring from the locking clip is not a good idea. i just measured my locking clips on my two drums and they are off by 2mm.

instead of drilling another hole, i used 3/8" and shaved the pin area that holds the follower. it works.

I loaded 5 rounds then i drilled accordingly in relation to the pin position, then took mesurement. I am glad to know now that latch position may vary, thx for the info. I wish to had the idea to pin to the follower pin first instead of the follower itself. If i get another drum,i know how to do it right the first time.

Taking the mesurement from the neck edge, that give 65 mm,wich is a more consistent mesure.

Question about removing the welds so I can replace the internals. I know you have to break them but how exactly do I cut them. Like horizontal or vertical?

Can anyone show me what to do.
