Another 858 forend rail question

So on a whim I put in an order for an 858. Then, as usual, I started reading about it :D . I have been looking into forward optics mounting options and I'm thinking the Kobra red dot is the best compromise for me. Anyway, I am wanting to put it on the upper handguard and avoid the rear sight "scout" mount and the $300 solution. This is a longwinded way of asking has anyone:

1. added a regular rail to the top handguard?

OR

2. Tried to fit an SKS rail.

I have never personally held either an 858 or the rail so I don't even know if they would be a possible fit, just wondering if anyone else has thought about it or tried it, or knows it won't work.

Thanks guys. I figured as much, I just had to ask. Curtton, do you mean all 858 upper handguard mounts are too wobbly?

Mounting a rail on the hand guard would certainly be too wobbly. The handguard mounts at the front with stamped metal prongs and there is sufficient clearance on the pin at the back that the design will inherently never hold zero.

if you do mount a rail to the handguard, you have to remove the pin and use a nut and bolt. surprising how secure it is. pinch the front of it in a vise to make the handguard even tighter.

hold zero ok, but not perfect. depending on the rail ytou use, make sure the nolts that attach it are not too long and rub the piston.

Thanks for the advice. There is a pic on one of these threads, the monster thread for sure, with a guy in uniform holding one with a what looks to be an OKO in its housing, mounted to the wood/composite forearm directly with no rail. Therefore, I wonder if that setup (using that mount) on a drilled and tapped forearm has been shown to be most stable.
