Bucks and birds shotgun

Carried my old 1200 12g tonight slinking through woods for any opportunity at grouse or bucks. Unfortunately neither came up.

My question is do any of you do the same with your shotgun of choice? Mine is cut down to 18.5” and is pretty handy to carry this time of year.

Yup, used to carry my 870 Wingmaster with the 28 inch barrel through Burns Bog on several occasion...
Maddening to hear to deer slinking through the Salal and not see them,lol !!!

I like to stalk my woods with a Tac-14 and after a heavy rainfall ..... and where I can walk the woods in complete silence.

But my dilemma every time I am out there is ... what do I load in the chamber? Buckshot or birdshot?

If I encounter a deer it is normally up close ... and racking the gun is not an option. The noise of racking will spook them right away ... and they are gone.

And if I load buckshot .... then I am not ready for that grouse that is flushing in front of me .... :-(

I wish I had a SxS with double triggers that is as short as my Tac-14 ..... one barrel loaded with buckshot .... the other with birdshot ...

Nice ... my approach is slug up front and bird shot behind.. if I miss a bird oh well, but if mossy horn' slips away by me not being ready I would have a hard time forgetting that one

Just do it friend. You have one in nine odds of harvesting it. Better than nothing, and you are always ready for waking up a nearby deer.
You are better with a shotgun than most of us!

I was once stopped by an MNR game warden in a local intensely hunted area here and he inspected what I had loaded in by SXS. If I'd had a deer load in one or both barrels I'm pretty darn sure he'd have fined the crap out of me, because I didn't have a deer tag (in fact I was so uninterested I didn't even realise it was day 1 of deer rifle season). Beyond that, I seem to recall that even having a buck or slug shell anywhere on your person without a deer tag is verboten here in Ontario; I assume they have that on the books to take care of known poachers. I sure do see most of my deer when hunting grouse, just as deer hunters see loads of grouse while after deer.

Big Bad, up close ... selectors or safeties don't work for me unless they are completely silent ... and all the selectors or safeties that I have encountered ... all make a "click" ...

I had once a doe walk by my ground blind on a quiet frosty morning .... at around 5 meters distance ... and when I disengaged the safety ... "click" .... she spooked and was gone before I could get a shot .... :-(

Big Bad, I think we are talking here about the scenario where a hunter can legally harvest a grouse or/and a deer. Meaning, the hunter has a license for small game and a tag for a deer ....

I mean why would I load buckshot in one barrel if I don't have a tag to use it?? Because we are poachers?

What made you assume this?

^^^ on the one occasion when I thought I might actually need a slug I wouldn't have had time to change out anyway. I bumped into a sow & cub at 20 feet, and while nothing came of it, it had me wondering for a few seconds about how much damage I could do with an ounce & an eighth of #8's.
