Okay, so I have had my new Savage Mk II FV on backorder for 4 months .. which came in today! So i rush down to the gun store (1/2 hour drive to the next city over) only to find out the scope that had supposidly come in 3 months ago was actually on backorder....

Well, okay, its not the gun stores fault so i grab the gun and take it home to endlessly fondle it as most new gun owners do ..

What .. wait .. why is my magazine not fully engaging into the rifle???

I push the magazine up into the rifle but the little metal mag release is not snapping into place. There is about .050 or .100 of material the mag must clear before the handle will snap securing the magazine into the rifle. What this means is no matter how hard i press up against the mag, the clip doesn't engage and i can gently just pull on the mag and it will come out of the rifle!!!

Has anyone else have this happen to their brand new savage mk II?!

Anyhow, as you can imagine .. i'm upset ... I am going to take it back to the gun store monday after work and wait longer yet for my brand new .22
 
Sounds like some bad luck there. It's not beyond a manufacturer to have some bad guns slip out the door. Everyone hopes it happens to someone else. Oh yeah, its called a magazine, not a clip.

lol, i mentioned mag or magazine 5 times .. and when I mentioned clip i meant the magazine retention clip lol

but I agree, i hate it when ppl say clip instead of mag ..
 
The magazine cannot be pushed up into the rifle far enough for this little magazine catch

I dont know if the magazine is out of spec (as I only have the one mag that came with the gun) or if the magazine catch is out of alignment .. the mag would need to be pushed about .050" or .100" more for the catch to engage that spot in the mag and hold it properly into the gun.

When the magazine is inserted into the rifle as far as it goes, is it properly positionned to feed cartridges?
It is very unlikely that the magazine's dimensions would be off. But it is also unlikely that the mag. catch could be that much out of spec. Pretty hard to stamp a part and leave too much metal.
I wonder if the mag. catch in the rifle is one from a .22 Mag.
 
it looks like the mag is in the proper position to feed, but I dont feel comfortable enough to load live ammo into the rifle while sitting at home in my apt :(

the catch is slightly cockeyed (by about .010) and i think i was more correct saying the one side of the catch needs .040 to engage, and the other side needs .050 to engage .. I could grind off the magazine a little to make it catch but I am more worried about the mag being in the proper position as I SHOULDN'T need to be modifying anything for it to work on a brand new rifle..
 
No, it should work right out of the box. Now I know that Savage rifles are testfired before leaving the factory. I'm wondering if the catch has been tweaked, twisted, whatever. Have you pulled the barrelled action out of the stock, to have a good look at things?
 
Just got done doing that .. and yeah, everything honestly looks fine. I can only think that if the mag is at its maximum allowed tolerance (that catch portion being slightly longer then normal but still within spec) and the magazine catch being at its shortest minimum allowed tolerance (not protruding down far enough but still within spec) .. then those two might make it so there is just that small amount of metal that's preventing the catch from snapping shut.

I did notice that there were a bunch of scrathes in the metal (scratches that removed the bluing) along the one side of the magazine well on the outside as well as a small ding on the outside edge of the well ... but they honestly only looks to be cosmetic ... which i'm definatly not a fan of but they wouldn't have effected the functioning of the gun and i could probably have lived with.

All in all, i'm thinking the quality just wasn't there when this rifle left the factory. I think come monday i'm going to call Savage and let them know how dissapointed I am with the quality of this perticular rifle.
 
Savage Arms is in Lakefield, ON. Actually, they would likely welcome your call, because it is not in their interest in any way to have a new rifle leave the factory in an unservicable condition. I've seen these rifles being manufactured, and the operation is very professional.
 
I believe it, which is why i decided to buy one of these. And baring the magazine well being scratched up, ding'ed and not functioning .. i'm sure it shoots quite well.

I hope I will be able to send this rifle back to Savage and have the entire mag well changed out ... but if they used a used magazine to do the test firing, I could see a worn down mag to actually function.

Oh well .. with the scope on backorder its not like I could use this rifle during my xmas break anyhow. I guess i'll just look more forward to my new 9mm M&P pistol that should be coming to me this month..
 
And yet, they gave me three this year...

Oh the story continues ..

(nothing bad in any way to savage arms)

I called Savage Arms who were very appologetic and suggested it would be best if I could ship the gun directly to them for repair as it would take less time then to have my local dealer who i purchased it from send it in after they 'look' at it.

Problem, the only legal way I can find to ship it to them in Lakefield is Canada Posts Priority 2-3 day courier .. who may or may not actually get it there by friday ($50 plus applicable insurance). FedEx and UPS will not 'legally' ship a firearm. The girl at Savage said most ship it UPS and label it as a stock but I want to do things legally .. something I pride myself on actually.

Problem 2, if Canada Post fails to get it to Savage by friday, Savage Arms is closed from Friday evening till Jan 2nd .... :( Which means my brand new lovely rifle will be sitting around some mail depot with nothing protecting it from some grubby fingers walking away with it!!!!!

*sigh* .. Savage has been very pleasant to deal with and they said they would do their very best to get it back out to me by friday if I could get it to them tommorrow (wednesday) .... but unless I call in sick to work and drive it up there myself (5.5 hour drive) then it looks like it'll be sitting on my futon until the new year ...

I can't really justify loosing a day's worth of wages + 5 hours of fuel for an impromptu factory tour and getting my new rifle fixed ... I guess I'll at least have something to look forward to for the new year..

A clear sign that someone is talking out of their a$$ is their lack of proper nomenclature with regards to a hobby they "supposedly" partake. If you want to be taken seriously, act like you know what you're talking about. Hollywood slang screams "I'm a poser".

Sounds like Savage is going to take care of this. Too bad it might take you several more weeks to fix. Keep us informed, I would be interested to see what they do to correct this issue.
