Short hunting barrel for 870 Remington express

My favorite grouse and bunny getter was originally an 870 Super Mag with a 28 inch barrel. Great for waterfowl, too big and cumbersome for field use.

I got a spare 18 inch 870 barrel off the EE with cylinder choke and had it machined for removable Rem-chokes by S&J Hardware and with an IC or Mod choke it's now my go to handy gun for tight quarters.

Standard 870 Express models come most commonly with the 28" barrel, but 26" is also readily available. Either of these barrels will pop up on the EE regularly as the owners move to put something different on their guns.

Then of course there are the tactical / police / deer / turkey models, which may be seen with 14", 18", 20", 21" or 23". All of these barrels come and go on the used market.

My 870 Special Purpose came with a 26" bbl. It's too heavy (and a bit long) for close upland work on grouse and woodcock. Probably be ok for pheasant.

I bought an Express turkey bbl for the SP. It's 20.5" long from the end to the receiver, has a VR and rem chokes. Much better choice than the original bbl.

I hear you on the length if you see a grouse along the road, try looking for a 20” Rem turkey barrel. They’re threaded for chokes, come with rifle sights and are the perfect all around barrel. 14” and 12.5” are nice as well, provided they are threaded for chokes. Dlask makes their own and will thread them if you want.

21” turkey barrel?
