Good afternoon.

I am interested in getting a handgun (H and K P8A1) which is restricted. I will be doing my restricted course this Sunday and then probably waiting 6 months for my restricted license.

Anyone know if you have to be a member of a gun club in Ontario to buy a handgun? I know it's mandatory in some provinces. Anything else I should know or consider?

I also hear it takes a long time to get permission to transport it from the gun store because of covid. Anyone have any experience with this?

You do not need to be a range member to purchase a handgun in Ontario. It can take a while to get your transfer approved from the RCMP, but I do believe the wait times have decreased.

Change your 6 months wait into at least 8 or more, the a 2 month transfer holdup t the Ontario CFO sh it show.
Then add at least a year if waiting to get into a club

Ask them to pretty please e-mail the transfer notification. That should save you 2 weeks over mailing it out

My longest wait was for my rpal, took the course a week before covid hit 7 months to get my card. First restricted transfer took 12 days and my second took 3 days all the rest have been 2 to 3 days. Ontario resident and a member of gun range

My recent experience: my son had his RPAL arrive Nov 12. The application was received on Sept 16 at CFP. 8 weeks total. My wife's RPAL arrived today (Nov17) after her application was received Oct 12. Five weeks, 2 days total. Actually quite impressed by turnover.

Wow. I thought things had improved in Ontario. My last renewal took 4 days; I asked if I could pay for a courier when it was ready to mail, they said "sure!" is I gave them my FedEx account # and Boom...3 days & it was ready to go. Last handgun purchase was early in the Covid situation, bought the gun around 10:00AM, called in the transfer from the LGS parking lot. I had the approval by 3:30PM, picked it up and took it home that day.
Something was shining on me that day; it was the fastest processing I've EVER had, by about 4 days. (this is in Alberta, BTW) It remains to be seen if the new, Provincially appointed CFO ( the lady is a well known collector & avid shooter) will make this timeline the norm.

It sounds like he is asking about a new PAL, not a renewal.

The ore recorded ram long when you phone the CFC States minimum 4 months for a new licence.

But adding a couple if months into that just seems reasonable as it's the government.

You don't have to be a member of a range to buy a handgun in Ontario. Although you can't shoot it until you are a member of one. I was lucky with my range application. I emailed them at this time of year when people are renewing their memberships and I was accepted immediately.

My two restricted transfers only took a week each time to be processed. The last one was about March this year.

As for needing an authorisation to take the gun home, I think you are automatically allowed to take it from the place of purchase to your residence. Don't take my word for it though. Double check for yourself.
When I purchased my first restricted, I was issued a new RPAL card which has the ATT on it to take it to the range and back. You have to wait for the registration certificates from the RCMP before you can take it out and you are supposed to keep it with you. I don't know anyone who has been asked to show theirs though.

Hey guys, new guy here. I just took my safety courses so I'm still at the beginning of my wait.. I had the same questions about needing a membership at a club to acquire restricted but was informed by my course instructor to indicate myself as a "collector" to get the ball rolling. Eventually I will find and get hooked up at a club range. I'm in the KW Ontario area, so if anyone knows of a good local club that's accepting members please let me know. From my armchair internet search, it looks tougher to find a local 1000 yard rifle range.

I plan on getting a more entry level rifle and handgun, but still doing my homework on what I should get. I have this draw towards older models with history as well, so we'll see what i end up with.

Happy to have found this forum, and looking forward to learning lots here and maybe even meeting some of you folks, even virtually.

Good luck finding a 1000yd in SW ON.
If you don't mind a bit of a drive check out TDRGC.com. That might be the closest range to Cambridge that takes new members without a waiting list.

Listowel rifle and revolver. 200m rifle, pistol, skeet and trap and archery. Inexpensive and usually nobody there during the week

A lot of clubs have started taking new members now, but the waiting lists are long and most require sponsorship from an existing member. Best bet is try to get on the list of a number of clubs and be prepared to drive. Both Barrie and Orillia have a lot of members from KW and GTA areas. There just isn’t that much available and a huge demand
