Remington 597 Heavy Barrel

I have to admit that I forgot about the price difference. While it's significant, I don't think it's really fair to quote the US MSR price for the Ruger. I've seen it for around $400 in Canadian stores.
There's about a $100 difference on average between the two.

I wonder why that is... it's usually higher.

Either way, $100 is a lot of money for someone on a tight budget, and can buy a lot of spare ammo.

It might have been on sale. They also had the stainless one for $475 which I prefer over the blued.

$100 only buys two bricks of what I shoot :(

Frankly I wouldn't let that $100 influence the decision at all. It won't make much of a difference in the long run. Either way it'll end up being close to $700 or $800 after you put on rings and a decent scope.

The price is better on the Remington, however the magazine system I prefer on the Ruger (fits flush with the stock).

The deciding factor for me would be which is more reliable and accurate. I don't know the answer to that. Also I'd look at which one has easy, good and cheap triggers to replace the stock ones.

Either way I don't think anyone would be unhappy with either.
It's a good thing to have an alternative to the Ruger.

Neither the 10/22T or the 597HB are as is as accurate as my $100 TOZ-78......can't beat bolt guns for accuracy. :)

:stirthepot2: are we?

Sure and my $300 Anschutz can shoot ragged holes. Bolts vs Autos, apples & oranges... But if you want to fire down range quickly and accurately (as needed)...

I still have everything stock on mine, see no point "fixing" things that work fine. I bought mine with "evolution" stock and I enjoy simply pulling the thing out of the box and shouldering it, just for the hell of it, its good ergonomic stock. SIR mailorder has the "yellow jacket" package but it is overpriced IMHO, you may want to get stock separately - will save a few bucks. Other than stock and maybe hammer, I say all there will be left to do is shop for half descent glass, sling and bipod. And ammo. Lots of ammo. And beer cuns, golf balls etc.

Well, my new yellow jacket should be in today or tomorrow, since I got a decent price on it and there was no hardwood option. The VQ hammer and extractor will probably be a good month coming in from the US at this time of year. All that's left is to sort out a scope and make some time for the range.

The yellow jacket is already set up to take centerfire scopes, correct?
