Good news in NB

Great news, I hope! :)

Here in NB, we have a caliber restriction outside the 3 big game seasons (moose, deer & bear) which prohibits anything larger than a 22 CF rifle. I'm sure that historic poaching is the reason for this old law. If this new law comes into effect, it will allow us shooting longer range with our larger rifles away from the ranges.

This is a proposal. Nothing in regulations, or on website about an actual change unfortunately.

So will this mean we can take any NR into the woods and plink away?

If you have a hunting license of some type , that should be the case . I suspect that some gun clubs and ranges may start complaining as people will be able to buy Varmint and Small Game licenses for under 35 bucks a year combined , and shoot year around on Crown land with the caliber of their choice ; and will no longer have to join gun clubs , or use their ranges .

Sure is. Changes came into effect the start of September.

It isn't shown in the printed version of the Hunt/Trap booklet, but you can see the lack of restrictions in the online version, and in the permitted firearms list.

If you have last years book or a print edition of this years you can compare and see the difference.

So you are saying its a done deal here in NB?

Great news for NB'rs. Here in Saskabush, we can fire our bazookas pretty much any time. Just need to be mindful of various big game seasons. A few years back, we finally, finally got Sunday hunting. That effectively doubled a lot of peoples' hunting time.

Our marvelous Resources ministry (at least I think they are to blame) came out with some changes to what calibers can and can't be used for big game. As far as I can tell, and what I gather, our game wardens didn't have anything to do with the changes. The rules used to be quite simple - nothing under .24 caliber was to be used on big game. Even the dumbest cluck could deal with that.

Even the .24-calibre rule is dumb. A 55gr .243" Varmageddon is technically legal while a .224" 90gr Fusion is not. If anything, the rule ought to be based on bullet weight. If the game warden suspects you're using something under the limit, they can seize one cartridge. Or just don't have a rule. BC never has and it hasn't been an issue.
