Is this stuff still coming in to Canada or is it long gone?

I am looking for some surplus Russian/Eastern bloc but all I can find is Chinese surplus.

Just a note, you have to add shipping, which can add up even for small packages. I calc'd the cost of Chinese and with shipping it's about $ 0.42/rnd (ca. $500 tx-in + $130 shipping) on a case of 1500 rnds. I was lucky, last year I got the Chinese (no one had Russ at the time) with free shipping - got 2x ! still on my first case. I'm saving my CZ & Rom 'for good' but the CH runs OK. 4-6" with irons @100.

Thanks for the replies, I am a new CZ 527 owner and just looking for some ammo to plink with. I had great luck with the Russian surplus years ago with an SKS but haven't bought any in a long time. I am unsure of the quality of the Chinese surplus I am seeing at Tenda and other retailers.

The Chinese 7.62x39 is fine. Better then Russian? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s cheap and widely available.

The Chinese 7.62x54r on the other hand I’ve had problems with: cratered primers, split necks etc.

As stated, Barnaul and MFS is Russian manufactured, non corrosive but it normally isn’t as cheap as the crates of surplus. I would try the EE or failing that #######, there is Czech, Romanian available on there on the regular, but the sellers tend to believe it’s made of gold, but if they are in you area, it might be a good option.

Brendan, I just looked at Tenda ( always watchin' for a deal;- ) and they have (SALE price thru Oct) on Chinese on stripper clips (always good to have) that comes out to 0.35/rnd (1100 rnds) plus shipping (have to order to get exact price) which could be ca. 0.10/rnd. If you have plenty of strippers the 1400rnd case might be a better deal.
Good luck
;-P

I'm glad I stocked up over 10 years back on 1200 round crates on stripper clips at $200 bucks per crate. I guess I learned to stock up from my old man because I'm still shooting all kinds of his ammo from the '70s and '80s. Depending on where you are in Canada I might be willing to sell you some Czech 7.62x39, pick up only.

The surplus 7.62x39 Chinese ammo will work just fine in your rifle.

It wouldn't be my first choice for accuracy, even for plinking over 25 yards.

Your rifle is capble of fine accuracy, with good ammo.

I wouldn't be shooting corrosve ammo out of it.

Still, it's your rifle

Lever Arms out of Vancouver sells both 50 round boxes/$17.50, packed loose as well as 1100 round crates on strippers for $450 plus shipping of course.

You don't bother to post your location so it may just be impossible to ship.

Unless some LGS has some left on the shelf, it looks like the Russian and Cz x39 is gone. I saw a few cases on-line last Summer, but it didn;t last long and was over $500+tx+shpg ! I always watch ####### for Russ, Cz and Rom as Ganderite tested x39 years ago (in the "Red" stickies) and found those the most consistently accurate of his samples.

I think you're right, but I just saw (today while posting above) a bunch (200 rnds in the 'blue paks') on #######. Too far away for me ;-( I have one pack of Cz left and 170 rnds of Rom Red Stripe on strippers. And 2000+ of Chinese . . . so far ;-P

I don't thik the Czech surplus on strippers is being imported anymore.

I didn't find much difference between Russian green lacquered and Chinese brown lacquered 7.62x39, they shoot pretty much the same.. I wish I could compare 7.62x54R but anything else other than Chinese is unobtanium. Chinese copper washed 7.62x54R shoots OK tho, but I had to spend some time tinkering with barrel shimming in my Mosin to get to ~2.5" 5-shot groups at 100m with iron sights on avg.

Look up Ganderite's test results. (in 'RedRifles' stickies) He made a 'custom barreled' x39 and tested a variety of ammo. Wolf WPA seemed the best, followed by CZ, Russian, and Romanian. I don't think Chinese was very avail back then, but my 51-Tula does pretty well with the 'gold/red stripe' Chinese. But I'm saving the last few Roms I have
PS - Thanks once again to Ganderite for posting that test report !!!!

The Barnaul is a bit better than the Chinese, and cleaner for sure. Just ca $1/rnd with tax, where the Chinese is about 0.35 tx-in. The corrosive takes an extra 10 min to wash with hot water, then clean as usual for .65 savings.
