  • today good results with IMR 4064 / Hornady 500gr RN / Hornady brass / Fed 215
  • looking for ~1900 fps mv followed Hornady Handbook load data
  • lightly compressed powder mild pressure load
  • Remington 798 23" 1:14 barrel with Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5x20mm / Leupold Mauser FN bases & rings
  • Remington 798 = Zastava LKM70 barreled action in Remington laminate stock

:cool::)Well done. I have a very similar sized three shot group, same calibre, bullet bench/range circumstances with my Winchester model 70 Super Express 458WM. Different powder though. I went with IMR 4320. Would post a photo of the target but :redface: I haven't got back into photo posting since the Photobucket :rolleyes: screw up a while back. Again, well done.

I bought a Zastava 458winmag several years ago. Out of the box the trigger had bad creep but cleaned up nicely with adjustment. It's a good rifle and groups well. I shoot mostly cast 485gr bullets in the 1900 fps range.

There's a name that brings a smile, :) Zastava. After seeing some interesting and informative posts on the 9.3x62, ;) aka 366 Wagner, calibre by a very knowledgeable gentleman on site,(Why not?), I decided ;) I needed one. Something a little different to add to the herd in the safe. In preparation, from a local site member I acquired a set of RCBS dies, Lapua unprimed brass and 285gr PRVI bullets. Thinking ;) 'inexpensive' I opted for a full wood M-70 Zastava from Trade Ex. I like full wood Mannlicher style rifles, but only in European calibres. Admittedly, it doesn't have finish quality of many other brands on the market but I was :eek: AMAZED at the accuracy of my first couple of handloads. So much so, I promptly ordered another of the same, in 7x57.

With factory ammo and similar handloads it isn’t that big of a deal. Oh sure it’ll push you around a bit, and you’re better off riding it out than trying to stop it. After it pushes you it isn’t going to circle back and trample you into the ground or anything. In many wayz they are easier to handle than many smaller and lighter magnums.
 
for my Winchester 458 I have to use a leather recoil pad as after the 7 shot you start to hurt. I use 400gr flatnose bullets reloaded to about 2000fps and they can knock over good size trees in a few shots. no deer can stand this type of bullet as they usually drop on the spot.

People tend to lean forward into the stock when bench shooting. That positions the butt against bone, magnifies felt recoil, and moves your face closer to the scope. Using higher bags so you so you can sit upright will fix that.

Today thought I'd try Blue Dot in my .458 WM works not too bad for me in other rounds -
