Savage Axis II Precision - Anybody Own One? Need Your Feedback.

I think they are a great deal for an entry level Precision Rifle. I can't speak to how this model is, but I've never had a Savage that didn't shoot really well with handloads. One thing Savage Rifles are known for is their not so great extractor, I've had a few that have given me a little trouble, the last one they just sent me some new parts for free, and it was fine after that.

I have one in .223. It is great - have a Harris bipod on it and a Primary Arms SLX 3-18x50 on it, and it shoots pretty accurately, at least on the 50m range where I used it last. Heavy though, compared to whatever else I have (maybe precision rifles are supposed to be heavy). The tang safety takes a bit getting used to.

It's my first precision rifle (so I have nothing to which to compare it) and I got it at a great price. One person at the store says it kicks a bit, but I haven't noticed that at all.

The buttpad has these little sections that can be removed to shorten it or lengthen it.

Have tried various .223 ammo on it and it seems to like the Nosler Match Grade (i think it's 77gr, but I could be wrong).

The trigger seemed ok to me, but for the others at my club who have shot my rifle, they indicate the trigger can be lightened a bit.

The bolt doesn't move as smoothly as I expected it to, given the weight of it.

The only thing I do not like about it is to raise the adjustable cheek rise, you need to use a torque wrench/allen key in two places. Would have been better if it was a knob or something.

For the magazines, I'd recommend buying them from MDT - it's half the price and believe it or not, for my rifle, it seems to seat better than the original Savage. I tried the Ruger AICS ones and they weren't bad either.

So only 1 person on CGN owns a Axis II Precision? I’d go for the 110 Elite Precision but it’s not offered in 30-06. Anyone else own a long range rife in 30-06 in the same price range as the Axis II which is $1100-1200 range?

I don't think they were commonly available here until recently.

It's a Savage Barrel, it'll likely be pretty much the same as any HB Savage, sub MOA with the right handload. The Chassis is MDT, so the quality/functionality should be there, and AICS mags. The only concern from my perspective is how well the action feeds, extracts and ejects, something the odd Savage has a problem with, but I have no actual experience with the Axis, they may be much better than the 10/110. If you bought one and ran into extraction problems (the usual culprit), it'll likely only require changing the extractor spring, and ball to fix. Parts Savage will send to you for free if you ask nice (Westfield, Ma, not Lakefield, Centerfires are made in Massivetwo####z).

If I was looking for a Heavy Barrel 30-06 in a Chassis I'd give it a try if I had limited cash. It doesn't look like there are many options in a HB for 30-06.

I have in .308. I like it, very robust & well put together rifle. The Heavy Barrel is real nice, but I'm hardly using it. Only get out to 200 meters at my range. Never did anything serious, but hitting 6" gong & just under a 3 inch group. I fired 5 Norinco, {sight in} at 100 meters, then 5 Remington Factory loads at 100, then 10 of the Rem @ 200 meters. Not the greatest ammo.. & I need a better scope, but, it did well. Regardless, I think Im selling it, as Im not really doing allot for Long Range, & need something lighter for the bush.

Just bought one today. Everything seems very well built. Heavy. MRA Maverick was the plan for this year's deer hunting rifle, but there is an issue and needs to go back to MRA. Will see which one I keep after the hunt. Sight in will happen if the rain stops today or it'll be tomorrow.

What caliber did you get for the Axis 2 Precision? And out of curiosity what was wrong with your MRA Maverick? I had to send my Renegade back to MRA recently so curious what was the problem with the Maverick?

Got the Axis in .308. I guess MRA had an out of battery detonation. The guy I talked to on the phone today (Rob, I think) said that it might be something with the buffer or possibly the barrel extension. As frustrated as I was yesterday about the whole thing, I'm grateful that it was caught early and I'll still have my fingers at the end of the day. At least I'm back in the hunt next week.

Presume you spoke with Rob K. He's a good guy - I dealt with him as well. Very responsive.

Nice choice of optic. I ended up putting a Primary Arms on mine as well (an SLX 3-18x). I also use MDT mags as well (they seem to be much more smoother inserting and ejecting than the OEM Savage as well as the Ruger ones I had bought earlier - the MDTs were half the price of the Savage.

I like your taste in accessories...

Seemed to be a decent guy to talk to.

Thank you! Just put a Gear Dynamics sling on it (from my BCL). Can't wait to shoot it tomorrow.

Man, you're getting me to 2nd guess my decision to sell mine! I just kinda miss my Hog Hunter, Medium contour, threaded 20" barrel. I planned to buy, when this popped up.
Did you buy it retail or used? Someone told me they were $979 or something last month @ Cabelas?

Brand new from my LGS. I'm pretty sure I overpaid, but it is what it is.

The "info" I received for the CABELAS sale, was, of course from someone wanting to buy mine. lol I tried to look, but can't find any evidence of a Cabelas sale on them. I did see one place for $1149..but that was an 'Old' price, they are pretty much $1200 atm across the board.

Mine was $1350+tax. Bought it to solve a problem. Only got to sight it in for 50 yards yesterday. Well, I'm attempting to break in the barrel at the same time as making adjustment to the scope. Should be really close when I go to 100 today.

I got mine for a great price at Tenda this past summer - it was $949.99 + tax, but they sold out within 24 hours. I think the normal price was $1199.99 or $1249.99. When I went in to buy ammo or such, the lady thought I was picking up the rifle, as many people were coming in for this. That got me intrigued and I ended up buying one as I love deals and they were down to their last one or two. Definitely happy with mine. Added a Harris swivel bipod for mine and it is a hoot to shoot.

My only complain on this is the adjustable cheek piece - would have been nice to have a knob or dial instead of having to loosen and tighten two torque screws.

Not the first time I went in to a gun store for ammo and ended up with a new gun. And I am sure it will not be the last time either...hee hee...

I'm thinking I'll prob. keep mine. hmmm..
I just still need to find a good deal on a Savage Hog Hunter or 110 scout! Something lighter, I can not worry about if gets dragged around up north/in the bush etc. + my Gun Club just added a 400 meter range..so be nice to see what she can do.
+ I'm just starting to Reload & .308 {for precision etc} is one of the main reasons why. Cheerz ~

& Weasel...Do they price match? :p Some LGS do, I think it can be found around $1199 a few places. Either way, Just Enjoy it!
