WHAT DO YOU MEAN BACK IN THE DAY :)
Yes and still do some special ones. But despite trying every powder known to man could never get that smell on a reload :(
Thousands and thousands of the federal paper target hulls :)

Nice set up sir.........no shortage here. ;-)

Thank you. I didnot think we used herco in them
Cheers
Seem to remember cil c-300 powder and red dot for target and blue dot for hunting loads but memory is not like it once was :)

We are old I still have a empty 10lb can of C-300 that I paid 20 bucks for when CIL went bust.. Just finished it off a couple of years ago. Replaced it with 700X. Stiil load a lot of Blue Dot was and is a great powder as is Herco and Unique .

LOL Just want I saved. I shipped pretty much the exact same lot to a member out west when I first joined he was some pleased when he got it
Cannot remember his handle but he was big into reloading the old hulls. The old man was a crazed yank gunsmith and we horded everything like this and now I thank him with many of the components no longer made I am still using like 16ga AA hulls SWEET
Cheers

HA yes we replaced it with 700X also and have lots of blue dot still in the stash :)
You might be old I'm just well used LOL

Well if Herco doesn’t work out, I have 700x, HS6, and even some Alcan AL5, AL7 and AL8.

Alcan now that's going back I first started loading using that stuff my old mentors at that time were into factory CIL Canucks and Imperials. They use to call me Mr Blooper even a light fogg would make that powder misfire. I really like the Herco in the 16.

Your issue is finding data for canuck and imperial hulls which wasn't even easy to get back in the day let alone now . Not the powder type since most are still around . Adding that they are 16ga is even tougher
Cheers
16ga com posted this some time ago for paper hulls but I have no idea if safe or on using it and remember when they say any hull that is not imperial or canadian made ones but there may be something in those old manuals they list

From the Alcan Manual No. 11. (Sometime in the '60's.)
Low Base wad (not necessarily low brass) hulls, i.e. Federal, J.C. Higgins, Red Head, Revelation, Super-X, Super Speed, and R-P: 18.0 grs. of Red Dot/no primer specified/2 X 0.135" over powder (OP) card wads + 1/2" or so fiber filler wads/1 oz. shot. Allow about 1/2" above the shot for crimp space. So the wad column may need to be adjusted with more/less filler wads.
For High Base wad hulls, W-W Expert & Ranger: Same load, may have to adjust the fiber fillers.

From the Lyman No. 40 Manual (but attributed by them to Alcan)
3 1/4 - 1 1/8 load: any paper hull/ W-W 209 primer (except for R-P hulls)/28 grs. Herco/ 2 X 0.135" OP+ 2X 3/8" fillers/ 1 1/8 oz. shot
For a 7/8 oz. load they specified 20 grs. Red Dot the 2 X 0.135" OP wads and enough fillers for the 1/2" crimp space.

From the Speer Reloading Handbook #5
2 1/2 - 1 oz load: 18.0 grs. Red Dot/no primer specified/ a wad column of 11/16" height w/High base wad hulls or 7/8" wad column with LB wad hulls/ 1 oz. shot.
3 1/4 - 1 1/8 oz load: 28 grs. Herco/ a wad column 9/16" high w/high basewad hulls or 3/4" with LB hulls.

From Hercules Ca. 1970
2 1/2 - 1 load: Federal paper case/Fed 209/14.5 grs Red Dot/R-P W29932 (R16L)/1 oz. @ 1165 fps.
2 3/4 - 1 1/8 load: Fed. paper case/Fed 209/18.0 grs. Unique/W29934 (SP 16)/ 1 1/8 oz. @ 1185.
3 - 1 1/8: W29934/ 22.0 grs. Herco @ 1240 fps. Use an SP16 w/a 20 or 28 ga. OP in the cup for the R16L.

Thank you,
I guess it all works out to matching a suitable powder to the correct shot weight and adjusting the wad column to get a good secure crimp. I will start low on the charge and work up. Sorry to all for hijacking this thread.

Most of the 16ga paper hulls I had stashed had no.57 primers and were useless to me
The mrs hade many of these out of them however :)

Mac ,somewhere around here I have a lot of those old 57 primers.Use to use them in my old Remington 28 gauge hulls.
