Enquiring for a friend. He has an excellent condition , hardly shot, JC, all matching numbers including the bayonet and is considering selling it nut has no idea as to its worth. Any help would be appreciated.

The British No.5 Mk I carbine bayonet is the attraction. It has the larger ring for the flash hider and doesn't fit anything else.

Actually, they fit the Sterling/C1 - one of the reasons real ones are so scarce is that when those weapons were retired, (at least in the UK) they had to be returned with a bayonet and some/many unit armourers went to the surplus market to "complete" their kit. As for No5 prices they're on the upswing, if the firearm is in like new condition, it is very scarce indeed - depending on where the rifle is, I'd say that $1K with bayonet is well short. The bayonet is worth around $400 locally, and the rifle should bring an absolute minimum of $1K - maybe $1200. Do confirm that the bayonet is real, there should be a stamping in the steel of the blade at the hilt - this could be a number code, either with or without a date.

Beware of repro bayonets!

A lot of people consider the RIA bayonets to be repros.

From what I gather, India and Pakistan both had a lot of No5 rifles, without bayonets.

Many of the bayonets from the UK had been utilized for other firearms, so there just weren't enough available.

Depending on the bayos, many of the RIA bayos were IMHO variants that were manufactured for their militaries and issued for existing rifles.

The later produced versions can be pretty obvious as soon as someone tries to fix them on a rifle, because they don't fit.

Finding a bayo for a #5 is difficult, finding one with a proper scabbard is even more difficult. Finding both together in VG or better condition is luck of the draw.

At the last Chilliwack gun show I attended a few years ago, a very rough bayo/scabbard combo was on the table next to me with a $350 price tag. It lasted about half an hour and was sold without any dickering.

I spoke with the fellow that bought it and he told me he had been looking for one for years, that he could afford

They fit the Sterling but not the C1. The C1 used the same bayonet as the C1 series rifle.

I stand corrected on the C1. I wonder what a new, unissued bayonet is worth? I should add that I've seen exactly one Rifle, No5 in new condition in 40+ years. It's in my gun safe - I didn't even hesitate, just paid what was asked, rifle, bayonet, sling and cleaning kit. A couple of years ago, the "friends" price was $1K for both, when the rifles averaged $5-600.
