Great new video up on YT from Clint Smith at Thunder Ranch on combat shotgun basics. For those not familiar with him be prepared to be entertained and informed.

Someone lent me Magpul's 3 DVD set on the subject, it seems to cover everything and more. As it were.

I watched it awhile ago, James is funny too lol.

Here’s the watchable link (I think it’s OK to post?)

This vid is Benelli-style semi auto heavy, the Magpul DVDs are almost entirely about pump actions and go into a lot of performance drills. The advantage of the Benelli is that you can interrupt what's in the magazine and insert a special purpose shell (slug or whatever)- and of course there's the lowered felt recoil. As this guy says, firing 3" shells for a while can reduce grown men to tears, I'd much rather do it with a semi. But man, Benellis are expensive and, based on what I've read on CGN, I don't trust the clones.

In both videos and as far as I can remember, no one uses red dot or other similar sights, BTW.

I think a lot of the training shows too much flash. What Clint and the Cadre at TR do are push the reps. You need to learn how to create a stable platform and load. That's it. The oldies at Gunsite and guys like Bill Jeans would teach just that. Throw in a few dirty tricks, and you're off to the world of home defense.

True, like everything you want to get good at once the fundamentals are learned it’s repetition repetition repetition.

The DVD looks awesome! I’ll have to look for a copy… then the entire series lol.

I just watched the magpul shotgun trailer on YouTube and it did appear there were some using red dots. The new Holosun AEMS has the cowitness mount which (from my limited experience) I think would be good to ensure you don’t relinquish a backup ghost ring / bead sight for something like a RDS in the event something happens to it.

The Benelli supernova pumps can also take up to the 3.5” and have that mag stop button, probably less than 1/3 the cost of a M4 too. I don’t think I’d settle for clone / knockoff either if I was looking into semi auto, hoping to try out the supernova soon though.

Shotguns are for hunting ducks, there is nothing lethal or threatening about these tools of the trade. Nothing to see here Justin.

In Canada, and for civilians, the defensive part of shotgun ownership is going to be to counter large hungry and/or aggressive animals: bear, moose, wolves and cougars. While there are 'higher consciousness' wilderness travelling people who claim they would willingly submit themselves to furnish a meal for a hungry animal, gun owners do not tend to be among them.

Oh .... you are right .... I better go and practice my tactical reloads for the event that those 10 squirrels attack again.

My mag tube only holds six rounds ..... :-(

I guess you don’t approve of people practicing or wanting to become proficient with how their shotgun works? I can tell you I’ve used tactical reloads while hunting grouse, very successful as well. I’m surprised, I can’t say I pictured you for a fudd but that’s the attitude we’re seeing right now.

I don’t see anything wrong with people interested in learning to manipulate a shotgun and becoming more comfortable and used to how the gun functions, regardless of the intended use. Be it a single shot, pump or semi, learning to use it makes you safer with it as far as I’m concerned.

I sure don’t want some guy on my left while hunting that has no idea how to load and unload his 870 or M37 properly, or has no clue about muzzle control. All of which you will learn from videos like above.
