S&w 460v

I will interject my thoughts on the 460S$W... due to it's massive size/weight and marginal ballistic advantages over the 454 Casull I will probably never buy one.

I also feel that the 454 Casull is the ultimate combination of power, recoil and carryability...

That sounds like a bad case of revolver envy to me, too bad your king got dethroned.:p;) Though you would probably enjoy shooting a 460S&W, I have a 500 S&W and it is an amazing revolver.:D Check out this holser for the X Frames, looks pretty good to me: http://www.usgalco.com/HolsterG3.asp?ProductID=3042&GunID=321

Hi

I'm not sure that carrying one "up front" while scurrying over rocks and logs is the way I would want to do it. Something that mounted on a backpack would seem to be ideal to me.

Since the only reason to have one is defence against bears, etc., I don't think that backpack carry would be too quick to draw from in an emergency. The way that holster is designed I think it would not flail around too much while hiking through the woods.

Hi I didn't think you were. Sorry if I did not make that clear. Bob

No problem, sorry if I was short I was trying to run out the door so may have come across wrong.

Now guys get rid of all those wrong ideas and buy the best from Bob Mernickle @ http://www.mernickleholsters.com/ here's a pic of me and my 8 month old son with my Mernickle shoulder holster and my 4.25" Ruger SRH in 454 Casull... :D

I have another modification coming where the bullets are on the strap that goes around my waist. I have a new strap coming that will be 2" wide for about 8" were the bullet holder is now then it will taper back down to the stock 3/4" belt so I can mount my double speed loader pouch.

Yeah baby I love good equipment...

You got that right! Same reason I carry a shotty and the same reason to carry a handgun in an accessible spot. I can't recall the number of times I ahve managed to leave the backpack and shotgun on top of the pack while I have wandered around to work only to realize that 15 to 30 minutes later both are still sitting nicely about a hundred or more yards away, and I really have to think about exactly where I left them. A handgun in or on the pack wouldn't be any more use than the shotgun lying beside it.

As to Camp Cook and his 454, i pretty much have to agree - to a point! The 454 is a nice defensive round against the big browns / grizzly depending on where one is from. H*ll, even a stout load from a 44 is better than spraying yourself with pepper spray. I was sorely tempted by a Ruger 454 but then I saw this 5" S&W 406V and said why not! While the 460 is a bigger, heavier gun, it too can be carried in a bandolier style holster fairly comfortably and be where you need it after wandering off from where the shotgun is nicely warming in the sun. I have come across both blacks and grizzly in the 30 plus years I have spent on and off in teh bush and so far we have come to an agreement. Normally the grizzly just bugger off and disappear as quickly as they possibly can while the smaller blacks have just stood up or waved their heads back and forth, sniffed and then gone back to their business while I have made every effort to get away without antagonizing them. I have no agenda to go around shooting first just because I can. I do my best to remove myself from the bear's immediate territory and let them be. This isn't to say that I want to go out passively and if things get ugly I want to be the one on the winning side.

This might help you out a bit for reference...

In my 7.5" barreled Ruger SRH 454 Casull I am getting 1900fps with 240gr XTP-Mag's with 38grs H110 and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp die... :D

I'd like to get my hands on some of those 200gr bullets, bet I could come close to nipping on the heels of your 460S$W with my little 454 Casull...

That is a pretty stout load. I can see the 1900+ fps and feel it too! I expect the answer is no but I've got to ask - is your Ruger ported? I don't think I am going to see the 2200+ fps in my 5" 460V. That velocity is out of an 8+ inch barrel. Mine probably makes about the same as your Ruger, I'm guessing ~1950-2000 fps with a 200gr bullet but I don't have a chrony so I can't tell. Once I start re-loading for both the 454 and 460 rounds I will have to see if the wife will get my a nice birthday present!

I wish Hornady would sell their bullets but that isn't the case yet. They still claim that their own factory load production is eating up the supply. Eventually.

I like my 629 5" and I like my 460V. In a wildlife defensive situation I know I could at this point in time get more rounds of 44Mag off accurately than I could 460Mag. I also know that all I have to do is hit once or twice accurately with the 460 and my current practice is working towards that goal. I figure that the 44 is adequate for the job as well but might require a few more rounds. I had a look at the 454 early on and it is a very nice handgun. Each situation is going to be different and I am quite simply going to continue to do my best to avoid confrontation in the first place. As a one of those great US presidents once said "Walk softly and carry a big stick".

Your right neither my 4.25" or 7.5" SRH's are ported and the 240gr load your refering to above does 1650fps in the 4.25" gun.

Actually the load isn't all that stout if I had a Freedon Arms revolver I could probably work up another gr or 2 and break 2000fps. In other words this is not the top load for the 454 it is for the SRH though.

Nothing about being dethroned the Ruger SRH and the 454 Casull cartridge are the best combination for packability and controlable power.

Just the weight difference is about 10 to 12 ounces heavier for the S&W which makes it just to big of a gun for my liking...

Here is a vid clip of me drawing and shooting 3 405gr WLNGC's @ 1200fps out of the 4.25" SRH the holster is/was brand new at the time I did the clip which is why I messed up a little on the draw; I didn't get the thumb break unsnapped properly... :)

Hi

I'm not exactly what you would call a small guy. Strapping the 10" barrel (+ comp) X frame across my chest is a major proposition. I'm not sure I could get it out of a rig like that any faster than I could get it out a proper pack holster. Getting it out of a pack - no way.

Dropping the pack with pistol is a *very* significant issue. I certainly have been there / done that.

Guys don't get me wrong I'm not flaming the S$W 460/500's if I had more money and was allowed to have more handguns on my ATC permit again I would probably own them because I can see a place for these guns.

But with that said crawling over the mountains day in and day out I just feel that they are to big for practical carry.

Here is another one for you I have 6 shots in my SRH's not only 5... :D

Nope I'll be getting ready too fire off the other 3 then do a tactical reload as I'm dodging behind a tree...

Truth is I'll be lucky if I even get 1 or 2 shots off... :( :) :(

I finally got to pop off a few shots from a new hand cannon this weekend.

I had never fired anything bigger than a .45 before from a handgun and this was amazing.

We started with the .460 magnum reloads. My friend used Starline brass, 250 grain bullets (not sure what make), 40grains of Lil' Gun powder, and I can't remember the primers.

We were getting about 2200 feet per second and about 3 inch groups at 20 yards free standing.

Its the 5 inch model, just recently approved for sale in Canada, and the recoil was surprising. Being so small I was expecting a donkey to kick me in the hand when firing it but it wasn't really that bad. Sure its like hanging on to a rifle with your arms outstretched but with a proper grip and stance... its really not that bad.

We later tried the .45 long colt out of it and we were printing some very nice groups. And like it was previously said... it felt like shooting a .22 after getting used to the blast of the .460.

Overall... I would like to buy one and I think the 5 inch model. Its really nice, its short so you could carry it comfortably while in the woods, and .... well.. come on... its a hand cannon.
